Etrian Odyssey is a really good series, the problem is that the HD Collection is nothing but an overpriced low effort scam for what have always been niche DS games that were just given an HD coat of paint and some little improvements and bug fixes. No, it's mostly punishing during the early game because it costs money to rest at inns and use the hospital to revive party members. The early game is already really hard with how few resources you have, so it's almost guaranteed that one of your party members will go down as you explore, especially against stronger enemies, events or F.O.E.s

Nope, standard DRPG stuff where you revive them in the dedicated town hub.
That wall of text is also not really something unique to Etrian anyway, all DRPG work like that and for the most part most JRPGs did as well, the SaGa games for instance are made with the same philosophy but are more western oriented with tons of recruitable uniques and non linear progression, though the modern ones have tons of voice lines and other specific party member interactions to be less barebones than EO when it comes to that, something like Lunatic Dawn goes deeper in the sim autism aspects and lets you fuck around with any NPC in any way you want, like recruiting them in your party or even marrying them and have kids with them (which you can then put in your party once they're old enough)
