I have never had a problem enjoying gaming. I don't feel like I'm affected by trends because if a game sucks i simply don't play it. Nowadays is better than ever as you can emulate all old stuff, and indie games are coming out left and right of high quality. I do sometimes wish there was greater variety and more unique mechanics in games, a result of the consolidation behind industry standard engines + trends prioritizing metroidvanias, roguelikes and such. But i still don't feel like I'm lacking stuff to play so what's the problem?

Gaming culture is basically what is downstream of marketing, overall culture, forum culture, imageboard culture, online culture. It's very influenced by a lot of different things It essentially means what ads will look like, what "gaming spaces" online will be like. e-celeb crap, etc. It's true this is on the decline, as are most online based subcultures. This is mostly what people mean when they talk about "gaming being worse".

That's not to say these are all divorced concepts for example culture being more "woke" means your favorite game's mod section absolutely has a trans flag in there, said trans flag is also absolutely going to be present in the cash shop of whatever new shooter is out. I'm sure you can point out other examples of these three things influencing one another but they are still three distinct things that make up this nebulous "gaming" we love to discuss.

A lot of Zoomers do not realize how cumbersome the early days of PC gaming was. People bitch about how bad optimization is for PC games now a days but it was much worse then. Buying a game on disk that you have the exact specs for and having no clue why the game won't run meant you were out 20 to 40 bucks unless you stumbled on some obscure forum that manage to figure out the installation. There's more translations of non-English games and they're all easily available. There's more romhacks, there's more community support for online multiplayer, leaderboards, even community made achievements if you're that autistic.

Worst thing that happened to gaming was poor people getting into it, then the game companies had to market to a lower intellectual demographic. Then everything became a clone of everything else and specific genres became a thing. In the 90s, yeah, there were adventure games, but Lucasarts and Sierra were completely different. There were space shooters, but Wing Commander and X-Wing were different. Now everything plays exactly the same.
