He attacked someone who talked shit to him and was killed. Because the killer acted in self defense, none of his royal guards thought it necessary to intervene.
A local ordinator reported that when they found the deceased king, the Royal Signet Ring was missing from his body. The whereabouts of the prized artifact and how it disappearied were still being investigated.

If he didnt die during the events of Morrowind/Oblivion he would have been deposed and possibly executed after the empire lost control of Morrowind

Maybe he fled back to Cyrodil once things started to look bad, I doubt he'd be above abandoning his subjects. I doubt his mom is still alive though she was pretty old in Morrowind.
