It's pretty great, and the budget vertical of choice hands-down. I prefer the 40XXH for its horizontal layout, especially if you're specifically looking at PS1, it's just MADE for it. If you want the GameBoy vibes though, find an Aliexpress coupon and jump all over that shit. 35XX Pro is also kino if you want a vertical with dual sticks, it's just got a smaller screen. Be sure to look up OS options, for me it's Knulli.

Play on phone:
>kill the average phone battery in like an hour or two
>touch controls (if needed) suck
>higher drop risk
>higher theft risk because phones playing decent games are theft magnets
>you've got shitloads of other stuff on your phone, leeching your FPS and/or being distracting with notifications
>if you're stupid, you're more likely to go to virus-filled garbage ROM sites and fuck up your phone or get hacked

Play on phone + controller:
>every issue mentioned above
>if wired, then you're getting extra stress on your USB port
>if wireless, then latency issues are an issue
>controller takes up as much space as a chinkheld in your pocket/bag
>a lot of controllers are fragile if they're not the "Backbone" of a phone
>most controllers are ass unless you spend the equivalent of a PS2-tier chinkheld on it ($150+)
>often can't use a controller if your phone has a case, and taking it out of the case is both annoying and stupid
>run the risk of the phone slipping out of the controller

Well, that narrows it down to AYANEO Pocket DS (too big imo), AYN Thor, or the upcoming RG DS. But that last one has a shitty chip, and may not even emulate DS properly. Then its a matter of getting a stylus which works with smartphones. I reccomend the ones with a disc on the tip for precision. But having said all that, EBA and other rhythm games arent going to play the best due to slight input lag

It's a bunch of the most lightweight shaders that RetroArch comes with by default slapped together. Can't touch something like crt-hyllian, guest-advanced, royale, etc. but I just wanted something with virtually no performance impact that can run on the really cheap systems that just don't have the juice to use the really good shaders. I made a few variants too, as I think some games are more suited to different ones. The bloom is completely overpowering on NES, for instance, and I prefer the sharper versions for 3D games vs the blurrier ones for 16 bit systems that made heavy use of dithering and transparency effects.

Serves a purpose, though. There's basically 4 levels of performance when it comes to retro handhelds, and the matching price points.

Broadly speaking, there's
1. Up to PS1, with light N64, Dreamcast, and PSP (TrimUI Smart Pro)
2. N64/Dreamcast/PSP, with light Saturn and Gamecube (Retroid Pocket 2S)
3. Gamecube and PS2, with light Switch and WiiU (Anbernic RG476H)
4. Upscaled Gamecube and PS2, most Switch and WiiU games (Konkr Pocket Fit)

There's a fair few options all around, except at that second level of power. Pocket 2S was it for a minute and even that's been discontinued for quite a while. Now we have the Pocket Air Mini and the Mangmi Air X, and people have been excited for both, especially at the price. It's good for people to be making noise over that, signals to everyone that there's demand, and thus money to be made. So now maybe other companies will throw their hat in the ring and feed that under-served market. I'm looking at you, Anbernic, I know you can have 12 different models out by Summer if you want to.

It's closer to 3 categories now
>up to PS1 (below $100 with shipping)
>up to PS2/GC ($~200)
>everything above with better scaling/enhancements (and some limited support for consoles above that (U,Switch, PS3, Vita)

The second category becomes increasingly irrelevant because tof devices like Mangmi and Air Mini being closer to a Category 1 device in terms of price.
Even my shitty CubeXX can handle some Dreamcast N64 games. Didn't try PSP because it would suck on a 1:1 anyway.

The third category is also more like enthusiast tier. Even if you can run PS3 games, The small screen will start to become an issue and battery life goes down the shitter.

Composite is more accuarate for sure, but sharp is 100% what i'd use and never tell anyone.

>The second category becomes increasingly irrelevant because tof devices like Mangmi and Air Mini being closer to a Category 1 device in terms of price.
But that's my point though. With the march of time we expect more capable systems at a given price point. Anbernic's XX line, for instance, is mostly around $60-$70 MSRP from what I can remember. It makes sense that after a couple of years since the 35XX launched in competition with the Miyoo Mini Plus, that systems that can emulate at a definitively higher level than those two are available for just a bit more money.

Of course PS1 level systems haven't been obsoleted just yet. Apart from the fact that the Mangmi only just started shipping and the Pocket Air Mini is still a couple of weeks out, meaning that that segment is only just starting to heat up, there's also the fact that those PS1 handhelds will remain at a completely separate price point in the near future regardless. People aren't buying them at MSRP, we buy them for $35-$45 from Aliexpress because they're always on sale cheap and have coupons available, half the price of the Mangmi and Anayeo. So the two power levels will also remain at distinct price points for some time. Eventually that N64 power level will seep down into cheaper devices, closer to a $70-$80 MSRP, which will also go on sale more frequently, and that's where the other companies will come in and saturate the market as I mentioned. But for now, it's still the 4 categories and it's gonna stay that way for some time.

I do feel like that one is the most versatile, in that it has the fewest situational weaknesses like the overpowering bloom and failed transparency I mentioned, and can serve as the one-and-done for most people's toaster CRT needs.

Tell everyone, who cares which you prefer? I provide options for a reason, they're meant to be used.

Speaking of, if you fellers or anyone else wants to give them a go, here they are bundled.

https://files.catbox.moe/abhc6v.zip

I tried putting them together in a way where you can just extract the archive wherever you need, select the shader presets from there, and they'll point to the right place because I packed the actual shaders in with the archive as well. Hopefully I done it right. Keep in mind they're glsl shaders as that's what these cheapo systems almost always have to rely on, so they won't work if your Retroarch video driver of choice uses slang shaders.

While a lot of these devices are lovely, what I don't get is how they keep releasing iterations with spec bumps doing mostly the same thing. What I means is, the market demand and sales number cannot possibly be that high to justify that, right? Even if the China market is massive, there can't be enough people just buying enough to have anbernic/thor/ayn etc to keep pumping them out. I cannot imagine a RG35/40 owner to go like "yeah I NEED the latest retroid 69 just to emulate better than what I already can".

Can someone explain to me, I am curious and it seems the enthusiasts are in here. For clarification, I am not counting the android-bundled/stream-focused devices.

At certain point if you're just going to play dpad centric games, you hit a ceiling on how much performance you actually need. No reason to buy an expensive handheld that won't even play the systems it's capable of comfortably because the controls suck.

You may be right, but I've found dual analog stick games to be extremely cumbersome on ANY chinkheld, even the Retroid Pocket 5. They're barely bearable in big ass consoles with perfect controllers. The Aya neo pocket DMG is niche, very niche, it's meant to play dpad games very well and that's it. If you want PSP or Dual Analog you're better served with a Steam Deck OLED for the bigger screen and compatibility. But... At that point... Why would you? Why not just play on a console or a PC instead? Sure if you're on a plane playing twilight Princess would be great on a steam deck but what people don't tell you is that playing on a plane sucks ass, I tried it and got dizzy, rather listen to music instead. Meanwhile small simple games like GBA games on a chinkheld play perfectly but I'm always annoyed at integer scaling options for 480p which is what you usually get, I miss the 351m desu... But the dmg has such a high resolution it fits both GBA and snes, neogeo etc perfectly, with power to spare for shaders, lots of battery life and it looks cool

Most phones only have good battery life if you aren't actively using them, and even shorter battery life if you're using it for anything even slightly demanding.
Doesn't help that they're all bogged down with useless bloatware that impacts your performance and drains your battery even more.

Almost all of these things are made with easily obtained and off-the-shelf chips or parts, almost all R&D goes into the case design, firmware development, formulation of plastics and rubbers for things like buttons or button membranes, and the actual manufacturing and fulfillment (shipping + handling) process

The only way you're doing anything fancier is if you get big enough to become Retroid, itself a child company belonging to Moorechip alongside AYN, and you can do a whole lot more custom designing work and fulfill bigger and fancier ideas

G2 will probably succeed and replace the RP5 entirely because it's the same shell and components and they're just selling out old stock, same situation as the RP2S getting rid of old RP2 shells with an enormous chip upgrade (which they should have kept doing, the Pocket Classic would have no reason to exist if they had, 2S was an amazing value device and we're not getting a proper replacement until just recently with the AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini and the MANGMI Air X at similar price and power points. If you're interested in either of these devices the AYANEO is the better buy)

They actually pissed a lot of people off doing this because there's basically nothing else for Playstation layout in the handheld space and because the stick move caused a lot of retards to jump out of the woodwork yelling ER MAH GERD I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR RETROID TO FINALLY GO XBOX LAYOUT, mostly because they smelled an AYN Odin2 Mini for $100+ cheaper. >AYANEO is the better buy
we don't know that yet.
Simply said Mangmi is better for PSP games because it's 16:9
Pocket Air (4:3) has the better performance (on paper)

>b-but the specs are better
that's only partially true, Pocket Air has a better SoC, for everything else Mangmi seems to be ahead or equal.
RAM, Battery, higher Android version, higher ppi, possibly more ergonomic, headphone jack.
It should also be mentioned that in practice it's a bit of voodoo, because some stuff might just run on one SoC but not on the other or very badly.

Mangmi might have one big advantage, that is potential Linux support which is currently more likely for the Mangmi device than the Ayaneo one.
While Ayaneo might have a small software advantage for being the more mature company.
