Is this a good gameplay loop?
so i wanted to make a simple little game on godot and the gameplay loop is like this
>VNs with multiple choices
>Bullet hell like touhou
>VN
>Bullet hell
Is this a feasible and fun gameplay loop? I know Godot can handle either VNS or bullet hells but can it handle both?

Meh depends, they appeal to different kinds of autists. If the bullet hell aspect is too grindy the VN people won't like it and if the VN aspect drags too much or is boring the bullet hell people won't like it.

Godot can do both at the same time just fine if you know how to code.

What if i made it level based so the VN people can read their VN without fighting a single bullet hell and the bullet hell people can fight bosses cuphead style without reading a line of lore?

Overview
Lyrics
Ah, Mr. Secretary!
Mr. Burr, sir
Did you hear the news about good old General Mercer?
No
You know Claremont street?
Yeah
They renamed it after him
The Mercer legacy is secure
Sure
And all he had to do is die
And that's a lot less work!
We ought to give it a try
Heh
And how you gonna get your debt plan through?
I guess I'm gonna have to finally listen to you.
Really?
Talk less, smile more
Haha!
Do whatever it takes to get my plan on the congress floor
Now Madison and Jefferson are merciless
Well, hate the sin love the sinner
Hamilton!
I'm sorry Burr I gotta go
But decisions are happening over dinner
Two Virginians and an immigrant walk into a room
Diametrically opposed
Foes
They emerge with a compromise
Having open doors that were previously closed
Bros
The immigrant emerges with unprecedented financial power
A system he can shape however he wants
The Virginians emerge with the nation's capital
And here's the pièce de résistance
No one else was in the room where it happened
The room where it happened
The room where it happened
No one else was in the room where it happened
The room where it happened
The room where it happened
No one really knows how the game is played
The art of the trade
How the sausage gets made
We just assume that it happens
But no one else is in the room where it happens
Alexander was on Washington's doorstep one day in distress and disarray
Alexander said, "I've nowhere else to turn"
And basically begged me to join the fray
I approached Madison and said
"I know you hate him but let's hear what he has to say"

I was watching a Yahtzee review the other day for the Dungeons of Hinterberg where he makes a comment like "the Persona formula of VN life sim by day and dungeon crawling explorer RPG by night is a functioning formula". Other games like Reccatear does similar with the shopkeeping by day and the dungeoncrawling at another time do the similar dual gameplay system that contrasts with each other. Shit, even Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Simulator does a system of restaurant tycoon> trad FNAF office gameplay> salvage segments that offers a big tonal whiplash from 1 to 2/3 back to 1. I think it'll work, just make sure if you specifically are making one segment less important or weaker than the other that you make sure the required play of it reflects it and you don't make players sit through a half assed VN story or you make the bullet hell segments as short as can be if you're not going to make it as engaging or balanced for most players. Difficulty selection may also make a difference.
When I was younger I was really into the story for the MGS games but I sucked at the stealth gameplay. I actually sucked hard at stealth, but I kept playing because I wanted to see how the story went. If you're lucky you might have an audiance interested in one segment who dislike the other, not because of the quality of your product but because it's not for them or they suck at it. I think a difficulty option would help so you can keep the BH parts difficult for those looking for a challenge but allow others to breeze through it if they're only into the VN aspect.

Gameplay loop should describe more than just what genres your game has. They need to be mashed up and integrated in some way as well.

Put the dialog options on-screen during the bullet hell segments with the 'better' dialog options higher up on the screen and covered by more bullets while the worse dialog options are lower and safer to hit.
Then between 'conversation' segments there are life-sim moments where you choose where to spend your time, grinding knowledge stats like History, Sports, Classics, that make certain dialog options easier to reach during bullet hell segments. You earn exp in these skills by grazing bullets during training segments for spell cards the girls will use.

So for example, you're trying to talk to an outdoorsy girl and she points to a plant that she thinks looks nice. 3 dialog prompts appear:
<Yeah, it's cool I guess.> which is near the bottom of the screen.
<Not as beautiful as you.> which is near the top and covered in bullets.
<That's a lemon fern, not native to this region.> which is either near the top or bottom depending on your Biology skill.

It is entirely feasible. Look up Dialogic, it's a dialogue system plugin for Godot that will trivialize the VN portion of your game, but is still really customizable. Plus, a bullet-hell is incredibly easy to make. Low art scope, easy programming, etc.
Godot can handle both easily.
Will it be fun? Hard to say, but I think there's a point in your favor that VN enjoyers and Bullet Hell enjoyers have a lot of overlap.

I'll never understand how people can be so easily bored. Do you never read? Look at art? Or just pictures? Or just outside? Ever think a full sentence? What about another after that? Ever consider pacing in a game like this? Do you get on your phone if a cutscene comes on? Do you get on your phone in the movies? What about in bed? do you take your phone out if you last more than 30 seconds? Oh who am I kidding you probably let someone else do the heavy-lifting after all, you're too busy getting your dopamine hit.

>Pre-mission story
>Gameplay
>Post-mission story
There aren't many games with a plot and discrete levels that doesn't follow this structure. Really it comes down to implementation, but I'd prioritize gameplay because people will play a fun game with no story, and will just watch someone else if it's terrible to play.
Also as a Godotdev it can definitely manage both, the Canvas system is cancer but VN are piss easy to make.

You could make a bullet hell game where you must pick the choice in the bullet hell itself, then you introduce a yandere girl who focuses her bullets on the options that she dislikes.
Likewise you could have a shy introvert girl that doesn't know how to open up so the options to get closer to her are the most dangerous ones.

Anonymous No.725177856 [Report]
I don't care for hybrid genres. VNs and gameplay are pretty diametrically opposed, some retards like shit like Baldr sky but I just found the gameplay segments to be tedious.

I don't want to read for 10 minutes to fight a boss, and I don't want to fight a boss for 10 minutes to read more.

A good hybrid is a branching story in a gameplay heavy genre, like Ace Combat 3. In multiple missions you get the chance to do things like desert your squad and join another team.

I mean it could be fine, but you run the risk of one half of the game being notably worse than the other and dragging the whole thing down. Both parts should feel essential to the game and be worthwhile. Look at Neon White for an example of a tacked on VN component that only serves to make the game worse via the worst writing on the planet, with no choices and the inability to completely skip it, only make it go slightly faster

A lot of people are screeching ITT but I think this would definitely have an audience. You just have to make both aspects (story and gameplay) be good enough and figure out a way to have both aspects synergize with each other (i.e. depending which route you take in the VN you get different passives/charms that affect the bullet hell sections for the rest of the game).

The oldest recorded premise is a game based on Castle Shikigami 2.
There's both a regular danmaku game with only small(and absurdly translated) cutscenes, and another that has VN sections + shmup boss rush. The latter is untranslated I believe.

Anonymous No.725191467 [Report]
Do they play into each other? So for example, might VN choices determine the boss you fight, the weapon you get? Would the bullet hell performance impact the VN segment, does strong performance in a level lead to getting to talk to new characters or having them recognise your performance, whereas deaths have them react with pity or disappointment? The key thing with a segmented game like that is to make sure there’s multiple points where both halves of the game feed into one another.
