I don't play as the opposite sex in RPGs so I can't relate, but the "female character customization has better options than male" bit is genuinely a problem because game devs don't know what kind of clothes to put men in while women can get all sorts of different styles of dress. It's not even a matter of how women can wear dresses/skirts but men can't because I almost never see a good three piece suit and its always basic t-shirts and jeans/shorts. At least one guy told me he wants to dress like a YuGiOh character instead of a bland normie but often doesn't get the opportunity. Same guy seemed to like a lot of the options for men in Xenoblade X. I think it boils down to game devs are just being lazy pussies about male fashion. And no, letting men wear dresses isn't going to fix the problem.

For certain games like World of Warcraft the devs want you to make a bunch of alts to experience different races, classes, factions, etc.

So some players will have a "main" they roleplay as themselves, but then make different alts of different kinds including females. And in some cases there's hatred for certain race/gender combos such as male gnomes/mechagnomes so people will refuse to play them. Unless you're an uber manlet yourself you can't even self-insert as a male gnome anyway.

Companies have done market research and what they essentially found is that little boys want to be Batman, while little girls want Batman to be them.

I mean you can look at lots of boys who will pretend they're like Godzilla or a T-Rex because they don't need the characters they're LARPing as to even be human.

Also game devs think women want to play as say, a fat women to feel "represented". But even when games like World of Warcraft put in fat female races, actual fat women still tend to gravitate to skinny conventionally attractive races like blood elves.

I generally think people should play what the want, but I value Cool/Badass or Immersion > Everything else, and for me. Guy protags just generally tick the "badass" switch in my head alot easier than girls do. I just really like genuine stories where the devs try their hardest to make the player feel cool or immersed. I can still enjoy fem protag games (All the metroid games and Silksong come to mind. MetroidP2 is probably my favorite game ever.) but usually fem protags in games are portrayed in the most lamest way ever. Thank you for coming to my blog.

I used to play as a girl because I loke trying to design my own waifu and I like the concept of a kick-ass girl (that the media fails to represent the way I like 99% of the time), but this was back when the plot was linear or there was basically no romance options. Nowadays that almost always have the choice to romance, I play as a male because I was cornering myself into either have to watch my "perfect girl" make it out with another man, or have a lesbian relationship where I can't self-insert or basically have dissociate to become a bystander and either way I would end up repulsed by this
