It looks like with the new Roots update, Peak devs have started to adapt some popular mods to incorporate into the base game. For example, cooking the bugle makes it behave like the laba mod, and the backflip action looks like it's inspired by HardcoreParkour. The milk is such a fun item if you're a solofag. You can easily tank the night if you use it right and basically become invulnerable to anything that the game throws at you, from dips in the lava, to storms and heat.

I was the one who took the screenshot, so this checks out.
The mod is AlwaysDisplayPlayerName. I used it because I did not remember the name of scouts and the game would very often not display the name even though I'm looking at the people or display a wrong name, so I used it to fix that.
I'm not playing with it anymore because I know what most scouts look like now, so I don't need the names.

in all seriousness, the most i've done is enable the safe campfire mod for 20+ player lobbies due to there often being one or two stragglers who refuse to give up despite not being even halfway through the climb, causing the rest of the lobby at the campfire to starve. it doesn't function these days anyway.
the whole joke about me cheating is getting quite old especially considering there are people out there who shamelessly spawn in items to get the upper hand when they think nobody else is watching.

So what's the use for the Checkpoint Flag?
The best use case for it I can of is placing it in a safe spot in Alpine to avoid random blizzard during the climb, but then that slot could have been for a Heat Pack or Lantern, which don't reset your climb progress.
Lesser use cases are probably placing the Flag before extremely risky climbs? Why wouldn't you use a traversal tool in that case to mitigate the risks, then?

Caldera has been a really boring time for me for the past month or so. It's just rock hopping.
I still love the Kiln, it's the climax of all the successes and failures the scouts went through to get to it.
The better the scouts fared to reach it, the smoother the climb, with fewer fatalities. But it is almost always a challenge to get everyone up, and, my goodness, do I love a good challenge.

If I wasn't ok with either outcome I wouldn't have done it in the first place. And from experience, failure means your body is never found because you're either clipped into some random crevice, or so far up the mountain nobody can reach you in time.

I think you're vastly overstating how big of an issue it actually is, shit is basically irrelevant, both in quantity and impact. I've seen it happen less than 5 times across dozens of games, and the result is as you say, either they die or they make it. It's the same impact as Squink speedrunning to the top in 10 minutes or someone eating shit and dying 30 seconds in.
As for cheating, I can't speak for everyone else, but I only do it if the lobby is casual as fuck. Spawning items is a much bigger issue and far more common.

Speaking of, sorry for constantly disconnecting/reconnecting and afking in the last lobby, but I had to test out my fork of CozyChat and it needed to be in a lobby with a bunch of mutes. The goal is to castrate the mutes whomv'st we've agreed are getting too cocky lately. So the main change is adding message obfuscation to text chat based on your distance from the sender (see pic). It just replaces characters with periods randomly, scaling linearly based on distance past one point, up to another point where you no longer receive their messages at all. So mutes can still be mute, but they'll have to be near you if they want you to hear what they have to say. It's not a straight mute nerf though, because at least you can estimate the distance between you based on the distortion, making it less of a pain to find them. Other than that, I changed the option that hides dead players' messages to act on unconscious players instead, so it works like voice chat.

Needs more testing and tweaking most likely, I want to make sure the default settings more or less match the range of voice chat, but we'll get there.

The problem with that video is that there are way too many similar de-sync bugs that have occurred for this to be solid evidence. Players have been able to walk around Mesa without getting burned in the sun, there are players who freeze in the Kiln and players have gone through Alpine without blizzards spawning on their end. Being the first to climb a mountain, and yet needing a cheat to nullify the fog can only makes sense if it was a broad spectrum God cheat and there is video evidence of Squink passing out where a blanket God cheat wouldn’t allow.
A single video is simply not enough evidence to confirm the use of cheats. You would need more instances to rule out the possibility of a one off bug, or something that cannot be easily explained as a de-sync issue.

I made a quick little mod that turns tumbleweeds into zombies, and then used Chaos to spawn tumbleweeds. There are people in the modding community already working on a proper zombie mod, so that should be available soon.
But if you want to host something NOW then you can use my shitty little thing, but all the values are hardcoded so there aren't any settings you can change. Just drop it in your BepInEx plugins folder and set the Tumbleweed spawn weight really high on Chaos Trials.
The zombie cap is 10 and trying to spawn more than 10 tumbleweeds at once will just delete the extra zombies, so either have a low tumbleweed count and high event frequency, or a high tumbleweed count but a low event frequency.
