While there are plenty of ex-CDPR devs working on Blood of Dawnwalker, there are also loads working on TW4, including the game director who was the animation director of the last few CDPR games. CDPR have always hemorrhaged staff, including immediately after TW1 and TW2, because they are notoriously stingy with salaries and demand long hours. There are still lots of people from TW1 at the company, as a trivial look at LinkedIn would show you.

I'm a big fan of the books for over a decade, but I don't think much of Sapkowski. His involvement means nothing to me. What matters is that the people doing the actual meaningful fundamental work are more committed to the spirit of the IP than most people even see the point in or depth of. Which is not the case here. I'm not concerned with looking for red flags because TW4's fundamental conception is wrong for the IP. I'll play it regardless because of just how starved I am for RPGs that deliver where it matters to me, but I will never soften on the standpoint that the game's premise was an easily avoidable mistake that represents a serious lack of judgement.

We've seen her barely able to take swallow and not die from the toxin thanks to the Elder Blood, and keep up with her swordplay, but that's about it. The game is set startlingly early. Witchers are common, and stories are widespread about them being more terrible than monsters. The Witcher's name is Tihomir. In the prologue, he has unkempt blond hair and beard, you get a chance to shave him when he comes down from a mountain into a wild, green valley- having almost died in a snowstorm after getting separated from your two comrades while in pursuit of a mythically rare manticore. The three of you were stubbornly following it with little thought to making coin, being three young witchers, boyhood comrades. Tihomir is young for a witcher, but not for a man. His training predates the final disbanding of the Order of Witchers, but you are not associated with any school established in this time, being instead just another unaccounted-for witcher who reports to no teacher or grandmaster. Having survived the manticore and the spring blizzard, your goal is now to eventually make your way to the lands on the other side of the mountains, where your comrades must have come down and out, if they survived.
The game doesn't have much of a main narrative or drama until the last third of the game, when you've visited every part of the open world. The open world is almost completely open from the get-go, you're only somewhat led around by impassable mountain ranges and bridges and passes that require the completion of a quest. The main objectives are all tied to either Tihomir's thirst for knowledge, or his calling to hunt the most legendary monsters in the wilds. His personality is that of a young hunter, who takes an interest in anything that leads him on in the pursuit of his obsession. The mysterious manticore you lost in the blizzard is always on his mind. You never join a school, but you intend to get your hands on their unique, novel potions, and especially their mutagens, with which to hone your body.

Oh and most of the game is wilderness. Sometimes you see entire villages just reclaimed by the violence and nature of the continent. The only farmlands are these dubious expeditions where they try to settle an area they're still in the process of clearing with fire and sword, and the places around frontier forts and walled burgs. Half the time you're not even running into humans, just elves and dwarves and savage dryads and other stuff that talks and is smart enough to wonder if you're a threat or an elf. Totally different vibe from previous games, because at this point Novigrad is a fucking tower with a wall around it and walking between two trees without a torch and axe is a death sentence. The "problem" though is that with a book, a woman who reads it faces no shame in being indulgent and self-inserting into the roles that women are portrayed in the story, because she is the only audience. When you move that medium to a television show, suddenly you have a much larger audience who will see everything. Not a problem if you have a male showrunner. You have a woman showrunner though?
