Yeah my problem with it is that the only enjoyment you could get out of multiple playthroughs is trying to get through the game faster. Because there's nothing else to it otherwise. Once you've figured out the boss patterns once, you're never going to struggle with it again because the parry system is so unambiguous that there's no room for experimentation outside such a dominant strategy.

Yes. Sekiro has perfect combat. DMCtroons and NiGs will argue otherwise that muh big swords and muh anime autism and muh spiky hair make for a better game but it just isn't so. Simplicity is best, and NG and DMC aren't enjoyable, they're autistic. Sekiro has a higher skill ceiling than both while still being simple. ng4 is made by people who only had a shallow, surface level understanding of the genre. it looks like it plays like a ninja gaiden game, but its actually shallow, unbalanced slop that encourages abusing mechanics and overuse of a few overpowered techniques.

Just beat NG4 the other day.

I've always loved the NG series but always thought they were flawed, especially in the bosses department. Hitbox nonsense flying around and you just barely scratch them with flying swallow spam. NG4 started out incredibly strong in the first few chapters. After a while you start noticing there are entire chapters of the same enemies, same slide and rail segments, the terrible boss design from past NG, or sometimes no bosses at all. You know the game is fucked when they brough the iconic (for all the wrong reasons) ghost fish mobs. It gets exciting when you pick up Hayabusa, but then quickly realize it's all reused levels and bosses and you only have the one sword to play with.

And in the end, I don't even know why they made Yakumo. His entire moveset could've just been Ryu's. Story is pointless anyway. The reprisal of the original NG NES theme was nice at least.

So, 6 frames? Tons of action games. The Royal Guard window is famously 6 frames, 4 frames if you play with Turbo on. Vergil's judgment cut chain window is 6 frames (again, 4 frames with turbo). It's a pretty standard timing window for "perfectly timed" actions.

i think you're looking back with rose-colored glasses. every boss in this game is among the best in the series. every chapter is better balanced than the previous games which would often be killing the same 2 enemies literally hundreds of times. the endgame asset reuse rush has been present the entire series, and ng4 doesn't have anything near double armadillo garbage or genshit+liz. the story here has coherent arcs and isn't ng3 so it's the best by default.
i wouldn't call ng4 perfect, but as a ninja gaiden sequel, it's faithful while smoothing the rough edges.

I was just hoping a new studio would come in an fix the issues of the past games, rather than revel in them. Some of the bosses are good, but the tank and the 2nd phase of the Tengu are annoying as fuck, and you gotta fight the Tengu again. The whole middle section of the game is like that, though the Shark is okay.

When Platinum came in to make a Nier sequel, they paid homage to everything from the first game, but fixed all the problems as well.

Has anyone done any detailed analysis of what impacts the enemy's auto-guard state? The only thing I know for sure about it is 3 hits into it = enemy parries/hard-counters you.

At first I assumed it was just a timer/hit counter on the enemy to prevent you from stunlocking them forever but in the Kagachi fight in particular I noticed sometimes my very first hit would go right into the guard, and other times I could do multiple sequential combos before setting it off. I'm really curious about the logic that governs how it gets activated, and whether it can be revenge-valued to abuse the AI by making the correct moment for BRIs predictable.

But I've had the very first attack I throw at Kagachi proc the block sequence, and I've had like 30 consecutive hits NOT proc it. It's not a simple "I have been hit X times/with X damage, I will block now to reset neutral"

Playing NG4 it feels button mashy. Some enemies move way too fast for me to react with reflexes and I'd rather just button mash them to death rather than react to their moves and attack. Literally the first boss killed me 7 times when I tried playing react and I beat it immediately when I started just mashing him and playing Simon says when he did those charged attacks.
