I love Owlcat games, and rpg's in general, so when I heard about their upcoming game, the expanse, a third person space rpg, clearly inspired by mass effect. I was pretty excited.
Then I found out that it was based on a book/tv series, which is a red flag. So I decided to try out the series, and now I am not that excited about the game anymore. The setting is the most boring shit you could have done with a space game. Is there even anything Owlcat can do to make the setting work?

I want to be excited for Regina's game.

I never played Owlcat games and am similarly excited. The over-the-shoulder camera aesthetic just makes it more visceral and fun instead of the RTS-style isometric bullshit they did prior desu.
About the books, I agree. Could stomach only the first two. The show is spectacular, though.

I liked the first season, because it had some mystery. Second started out strong, then became boring. I dropped it after just 4 episodes into the third season.

I was also excited by the game so I read the first book and the setting is indeed pretty boring but the characters and the protomolecule kept me reading, it's the thing that turns people into husks similar to ones from Mass Effect. When I read the 2nd book I'll check out the show.

The setting is extremely interesting. It's way more fun to have a plausible near future exploration of humans in our solar system than just tossing in dozens of humans wearing makeup and prosthetics on their face pretending to be aliens. You've already had a thousand of those. Let something be different for once.

You misunderstand the Expanse then. Humanity wants to colonize everything in the system. That includes Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and their moons. It needs stations in the asteroid belt to fuel, repair, and resupply ships. Who is going to run these stations? Put people from Earth and Mars there, they just become "belter". Belters are not a solid faction of uniform downtrodden people. They''re tens of millions of people that live in low gravity asteroids, further out than Mars but not as far as Jupiter. And it's one of the most interesting sci-fi aspects of the setting. It's almost never explored in any other sci-fi. Audiences always assume humans will never change and be exactly the same in the future. If humans can't leave the solar system in any meaningful way, then humans will start living out in space more and more. The body body doesn't stay the same in low gravity and changes quite a bit. They get to the point they physically can't tolerate going down to a "heavy gravity" world like Earth without dying. The Inner Planets almost view them as alien and vice versa. You're mad about them as a faction since you don't like the "poor minority group", but just because it makes you seethe doesn't mean it's not realistic and interesting. Humanity has always used some disposable slave work force to get things done and not cared if they died horrifically. The Belters are a thousand different factions not this single homogenous group you think they are. They're only able to get a coherent fighting force together to finally strike back due to the chaos the ring introduces. And they're fractic to stop the exodus of people since no sane person would want to live in the belt anymore if there's brand new worlds available. Simply Earth and Mars fighting wouldn't be anywhere near as interesting.

This is going to be owlcats first big budget mainstream game. They are playing it as safe as they can. Look at the companions. They are all conventionally attractive, even the diversity ones. No weird monster girls or fetish bait.
The gameplay is also just mass effect. Nothing complex.

I think the show is fine but there's honestly nothing really appealing to me. Even the creators intentionally gamifying it with the High Tech, Medium Skill, Low pop Mars, Med Tech, Low Skill, High Pop Earth, and Low Tech, High Skill, Med Pop Belters did little to make it appeal to me.
All the space magic is boring. Going too far to try and make it hard science is boring. The instant apocalypse available anytime is boring. The future dystopic setting is boring.

It has the same problems as something like the Magicians where its hardcore fans think its edge means that it's mature and deserves more popularity when in fact people don't really want a miserable setting with nothing cool, or perhaps cool to a very small minority. There's a reason why Harry Potter is 1000x bigger than the Magicians and Trek/Wars is 1000x bigger than the expanse.

Grounded universe with flip-birn space ships, without any magic (they're forcing magic as protoshit for this game but it isn't something like bio shit from ME universe), no aliens, no interstellar travel without gates (specific timeframe), no epic space cities, megastructure or anything. It's not even wild west universe where anyone can own combat spaceship with modern armor and weaponry in any normal situation similar how you can't just buy F22 for casual war crimes.
It's also based on TV show (no one cares about books) so design and assets will be stripped from TV show instead of using their own interpretation of books. Same thing happened with ASoIaF after GOT.
Because it is based on books and not a sequel to the books it will be forever shackled by book story and events.
