Rather than “paid”, Tencent bought shares in the ""new company”" that the Guillemots created to evacuate their major IPs out of Ubisoft.
Obviously, only Tencent and the Guillemots knew about this new company.

I wish I could have seen the stupid looks on the shareholders' faces after the meeting where this was announced.

Just think of it this way: as far as the quality of games released is concerned, in the year 2025, Konami is in a better place than Ubisoft. Significantly better, actually. Let that sink in for a moment.
