I forget the exact rules, but basically every pixel is a cell. If a cell has a certain amount of cells around it that are lit up, the cell either lights on or off. Repeat ad infinitum.

People are still discovering new ways to create certain behaviors and some of the more complex patterns have had years of research put into creating them.
