Yes and no, long story short there are 2 ways of playing PSX games.
One is playing them NATIVELY - as in, not emulating by putting original CD or using disc swap trick to boot a burned copy.
Second is playing them EMULATED by using a different branch of OPL (the original main one has it disabled by default) or PSBBN or DKWDRV.
Basically playing non-legit PSX games on PS2 is a hassle because tldr the console disables certain hardware functions, and some of the engineers at sony just said fuck it and decided to make POPS emulator for the jap PSBBN as a gimmick for playing PSX games through HDD, and this is what modders used for the other stuff like OPL etc.
This means the emulation is very inaccurate, as it was only made for few example games for that PSBBN service. It's simply better to have a modded PSX if you don't want to juggle discs around.
