I mean it pretty much was a co-op mod for RE4 with concessions in gameplay to make it multiplayer, and RE4's gameplay is one of most lauded of all time, so its like you take the best 3rd person shooter gameplay of the time and make it a bit shittier, and I never got why people hated this game in the first place. If I never got to play it with my friends I might not love it so much, but I definitely had more fun with the mercenaries mode of RE5 than most games I ever played

I’m playing through 5 for the first time and holy fuck these guys can go fuck themselves, specifically in the first area you encounter them

Wesker feels like a character who they were more concerned than making look cool than making sense. How he came to the conclusion that killing everyone on Earth was a good plan is a little above my paygrade. He sure was stylish though.

It was far more mindless but I did like being able to re-do old missions, grind money and buy upgrades. Co-op is great too of course.
Even on release, despite having played the prior four numbered titles, I wasn't really bothered by it. It's not as good as they are but it was still a fun game.

Finished it for the first time this week, played it on Veteran. Completely inferior to 4 but I can see how playing it with another human would elevate the experience tenfold. My main problems were how a lot of bigger enemies were tanky as fuck (fuck the Lickers) and how a lot of weapons would remain unused as they were relegated to later chapters when someone on their first playthrough (like me) would have already invested on upgrades, and selling upgraded weapons wouldn't give you any money at all to replace them. Bosses sucked ass as a whole except for the Uroboros Wesker fight and there was an obvious unbalance between being able to almost one shot Majini to wasting several minutes just trying to down a chainsaw.

Yes, that area sucks, Sheva died on me once because she got literally gangbanged on a second floor because she was too stupid to keep attacking instead of jump down. Boy you're not prepared to the oil refinery area with TWO chainsaw Majini one after the other, so you better be playing on Normal, otherwise you'll really have to manage your ammo properly because those fucks just refuse to die.

By all means, he had to die eventually with how dangerous he became, but it's a shame that it had to happen on 5. Him being the true final boss of 6 with all of the characters joining together against him would have been a way better send off.

Tell me about it, the only Lickers I didn't kill were the ones before the elevator you had to wait to arrive, and I got extremely lucky because they were just walking past the corner when the door opened. Playing it blind with a buddy is a 10/10 experience. Shame it took forever for a mod that removes QTEs because it's more enjoyable to laugh at the absurd cutscenes than have to push buttons.

It's not that Sheva's AI in particular is bad, it's that the AI companion itself is mostly incompetent and needs the player to constantly give appropriate commands to make it work decently. More people only notice Sheva's AI being bad because more people play as Chris, but both perform about the same.

I know original I played it a shitton of times when I was younger, while remake I went for all achievements and ended up throwing over 80hrs at it. I'm actually kinda wondering if I want to skip 4 altogether (not counting Separate Ways on the remake) to not get burnout, since I'm mostly doing it to catch up the story before 9 releases
2 and 3 I kinda want to do all the achievements on the remakes, but I do know that 3 og is the better version...

The thing is that the AI is a blatant stopgap measure for a real player. This sounds obvious, but AI can pick up the claymores you're placing, waste all of its ammo in record time if you're not careful with the commands, and has godawful combat priorities like in the Wesker-Jill fight. Even if you temper the AI carefully with knowing what commands to use, for a first time player who isn't quite sure what they're doing she's basically one gigantic but necessary escort quest that can shoot back until you find out the tricks involved. It's not much surprise that people prefer to ignore the game entirely if they don't have a friend to play with, and the solo players that can tolerate the AI work in spite of the problems.

If you give your AI partner a machine gun, they won't waste the ammo, instead firing 2 burst rounds and going for melee hits if possible. Also AI Sheva with the bow is fucking lethal, legit never misses a shot

I just beat that part. I didn’t see the issue. You can sneak past the first group, and then just run away to the elevator. After that I just stalled by spamming the grenade launcher and it stunlocked them all. Brought enough time for the elevator to arrive

My friend and I found the QTE fails to be funny and it added to the banter. They were never hard enough to be frustrating. Some of them are super quick and hard to react to but nothing you can't just memorize and be prepared for next time.

It's just RE4-lite with co-op. They gave the game an actual mission structure without backtrakcing and proper level design, removed the merchant and added even more QTEs. When they remake it, they have to add a merchant and make the game more open, like RE4.
