I disagree. Tenpai is strong because it's core engine is fucking insane. The field spell, Chundra, and Kaimen alone would make an entire archetype. But together with all the other stuff they have like the free revives, the level 10 that turns off all effect ACTIVATIONS, being able to double OTK through Prosperity, etc etc puts them over the top. People wrote it off at the beginning because it was a going second deck in a game where going second has almost never been good. Konami genuinely overcompensated. But the slim engine enabling a ton of hand traps is kind of a chicken and an egg problem. A slim engine is itself very strong for deckbuilding reasons. HERO decks are weak precisely because the engine requirements have a bunch of bricks and hard garnets and such, and just taking HEROs' exact endboard and making it so they can accomplish that with 15 cards in the main deck instead of 30 would be a massive buff to the archetype. This is good partly because you can fit more hand traps, but even if they banned every hand trap stronger than DD Crow decks with slim engines would still be preferable over heavier engines like HERO.

Last format I was Master III by this point in the season, I'm Diamond IV right now. It's really fucking frustrating. Going second is about as good as it gets for a deck that isn't breaker spam. But going first the endboard is just not powerful enough. What do I run to make going first stronger outside of bricks (Nimbles or Mitsurugi)?

Main problem imo is Bystials are not starters. Even Lubellion is not a starter and you cannot cook unless you get Lubellion or Saronir in rotation with hard draws.
Mitsurugi is accessible through Herald which is insanely easy to summon if you open either of the level 2 tuners, but even at 48-50 cards it bricks like a motherfucker, you have 3 hard bricks in Murakumo, Kusonagi, Azurune and cannot run SuPo anymore
40 cards was a necessity last format VS Maliss, Ryzeal because you wanted to reach drolls.
Running the bricks I routinely got endboards like picrel but it didn't feel worth it, you lost more going second

If you're talking about MD specifically a big part is that the paper game and MD are fundamentally at odds with how the game should be played. In paper you have to physically haul your ass to locals and wait until everyone finishes their rounds, so paper has an incentive to make every game go into time so that you're playing the entire time you're at locals. MD is different, you want quick rounds so you can instantly queue up for the next game and get your event rewards and dailies done.
A good case study of this is Tenpai, which while it did see a lot of representation in paper due to being good and incredibly cheap to build, it was nowhere near as present as it was in MD because playing Tenpai in paper basically meant finishing all your rounds in 5 minutes and then sitting there twirling your thumbs for 45 minutes while everyone else was having fun. The deck only popped up in tryhard tournaments, nobody played it for fun at locals, because playing like that is not fun.
Since cards are designed for paper you have every single new deck coming out being a combo fest with insane recursion and 12 starters because if every single game is over by turn 3 you better make sure playing 9 turns of YGO takes 50 minutes and you better make sure bricking is impossible.

Nuclear banlists that focus on limiting one card combos would be the best option. Not outright banning cards and making decks unusable, but actually making people have to worry more about getting interrupted without them just scoffing them off because they had 2 more one-card starters that don't use the normal summon in hand. Same with generic engines, archetypes like Fiendsmith, Mitsurugi and Millennium are only used as handtrap bait at worse and non-normal summon starters that pivot into the main archetype at best.

Ryzeal cards lock you into R4NK so you cannot go into Draco Future, there are way too many normal summons (some of which are soft-garnets that you don't wanna draw) and if you opened no Onomat you end up with a suboptimal Ryzeal board, no way to bridge into the supplementary archetype.

TCG Goat used to be spoken of as a skillful monoformat with the goat control highlander deck, like Magic the Gathering but YGO, but nobody plays that anymore because it was not that good in retrospect and compfags found out combo and stall was better. Activating an effect means starting the chain link. Resolving the effect is when the chain starts going backwards and actually doing all the effects. Anything that happens while building the chain(aka while activating) is not an actual part of the effect itself, but is either targeting or is paying a cost. Anything that happens as the chain resolves is the actual effect.
You can tell which is which by the semicolon. Anything before a semicolon is done on activation so is not part of the effect. Anything after IS the effect so is done when the chain resolves.

Compare MX Saber Invoker to Gigantic Spright. Both detach 1 to summon from deck. But Invoker detaches before the semicolon so is done as cost and happens before the opponent can stop it. Gigantic detaches after the semicolon, so if you were to chain an effect to Gigantic to destroy it on a higher chain link, then it'd never get to detach the material. And since Gigantic says "And if you do, special summon a guy" that means that he did not detach so he does not get to summon.
This is also important with Redoer and Tear. Redoer also detaches as effect, and Tear monsters need to go to the GY from an effect(not a cost!) to trigger their fusion, so Redoer detaching one can cause them to fuse while 99% of xyz monsters cannot.

If you're actively rolling for the Secret Pack, I would even advise to wait and see if you get enough copies of the URs to not have to buy the Structure Decks, but if you don't care about the alt-arts, just buy them and craft the two copies of Lady's. In a rare show of generosity, Konami made both Filia Regis and Cehrmba SR, so Dragonmaids remains as the cheapest beginner deck you can craft. Gem Knight Fusion sets it all up easily though sending her+Nepyrim for Serphanite/Rose Diamond, then Nepyrim summons herself by discarding something and that's 3 fairies. If you drew her then you can use Veiler as material instead and Nepyrim can discard her which causes her to summon herself.

All you need is 3 spells in the GY to start getting your bonus effects. Making your deck worse so you can sometimes draw Grass to get 3 in the GY isn't worth it. You'd probably have an easier time getting 3 in the GY if you cut down to 40 and could draw Upstart/Engage more often. You can just run Foolish Goods if you want more spells in the GY that badly.
Also part of the deck's strength is drawing into more draws which draws you more draws which is less likely at 60.

If you're playing a ton of breakers then you throw out the breakers to break their board, then start spamming Engage to pick apart the rest and either OTK or setup to deal with their followup.
If you're playing a going first build then you need hand traps because your endboards aren't fantastic and you try to spam engage while setting up interruptions like Anchor+Lemnis+Zero.

It's very clearly built with gacha design in mind, but it's so generous with the gacha mechanics that it's hard to care even if you hate gacha games. And also it's a card game, they are basically proto-gachas anyway.
I hate gacha games not because they release new stuff that you randomly get but because they tend to be extremely p2w, they are designed to milk you of every penny they can get, they tend to require a lot of grinding, and they have shit gameplay.

It's only autowin vs some decks. Others will either put up a negate before it's active, or will push through the Nib or will have already searched out their traps/setup their GY stuff, or will do half their summons on your turn, or will just not do 5 summons or will have bricked.
People often run it at 1 because then you can hope to draw into it with Maxx C if the opponent tries to push through it.

It's a gigabrick going first. Without Apo you could play more than 1, but also with 1 less Called By you're resolving Maxx C and Mulcharmies more often if you're playing them so you should theoretically be able to draw into it or other handtraps to end their turn.

I find it funny Apollousa was considered so powerful she had to be banned.
She negates activations but doesn't destroy. If you dropped that card in the Synchro era monsters like BLS could just burn all of Apo's negates by themselves. Any soft OPT removal murders Apo.
But Konami has basically gotten rid of almost all soft OPTs on modern cards which makes Apo so much stronger.

When Spright released in MD everyone was posting combos of how the deck can search Maxx C by doing shit like summoning it with Gigantic then bouncing it to hand and everyone doomed over how the game was ruined, but then it turned out that those combos were really bad compared to just using your material to set up additional interruptions.

Herald play is insanely good. in Bystial Spright you search a lot of bricks you can just shuffle back to summon plaguespreader which you can summon over and over with xyz's. herald lets you turn saronir into magnamhut by adding back lubellion. it's much harder to do that with something like tricorn

Unfortunately they made Avance only able to pull out of the banish pile once per duel, and their endboard is a monster negate + banish, Unicore turning off ED monsters (but only if they were summoned from the ED), and you will probably pick the Trishula banish 3 over Metaltron being pseudo-SP so not really.
