The reality was that Squaresoft had overspent and overextended all around; they thought they were the darling rockstars of the gaming industry that could do no long, so they had a dozen game projects all shooting off at once, and burning more money than they were making in the process. The Playstation exclusivity funded the games, and FF7's home was Playstation so it doesn't really make sense to make it multiplat at that point because the main audience would be there. Plus, what good would it have done to port it to Xbox or Switch? As far as we've seen PC sales aren't great either, only Capcom seems to get solid PC sales barring Helldivers 2 on Sony's side.
