They didn't realize that 90% of the players didn't grind early access version so getting to the actual content would take months for a new player.
I had to use a savegame editor and it still took me like ~30 runs to unlock just the first rival (makes the boss fight actually exciting). I'm not sure what was the reason for timelocking all the content like that and I don't really see the reason to run empty runs for a chance for a new unlock.

They tried to stretch the first game too long to the point that it completely wore out its welcome. Also the ending sucks and very clearly went through a rewrite at some point because the game structure necessitates a happy ending where nothing changes. But the biggest problem is that the game's main selling point, the dialogue, is complete shit. None of the characters have anything interesting to say and every encounter is just some menial positive small talk. It has some of the worst writing of any Supergiant game and all because they tied themselves down to a garbage structure they can't do anything with. What a waste of talent.

The idea is to artificially inflate the playtime so you get a "longer game". Issue with roguelikes is that it becomes so transparent most people will call it out before going with the flow. It's one of the reason people still hates Darkest Dungeon 2. Seeing that you have to grind to permanently increase the stats of characters doesn't make you go "oh, so it will be easier later on" but "oh, so you don't want me beating the game too soon".
Go the other way, if you fear players might beat the game too fast, let them unlock harder difficulties with higher rewards. People want to be stuck on what they find to be a fair challenge, not what you as a dev perceive as such.

The original ending was terrible, and whilst the rework to it after the negative feedback fixed one of the big elements of it, so many other endings for the rest of the cast don’t feel satisfactory.
The justification to keep fighting just doesn’t add up.

I feel games can recover from a weak start, but they can never recover from a weak ending.

Played Hades 1 for 10 hours and got to Elysium only to be chopped-up by the minotaur. I quit it cus of the unreasonable grind (I mean, grinding is a part of the genre, but that was too little too slow of a progression system) and since fighting the same bosses over and over again becomes boring after a while. They should've gone the Binding of Isaac route and mix it up with the boss fights (though I guess they kinda did that with the mini bosses you encounter randomly, but iirc there were only 2 or 3 mini bosses to choose from!). I know Supergiant Games have the talent to pull it off better than they did.
I've been listening to the OST of Hades 1 and Hades 2 on weekend drug benders regularly and they're both good.
Though I'm hearing mixed opinions about Hades 2. Is it any good? Worth pirating?

I mean, the game had some redeeming qualities to it. The combat was as I expected it to be, flowed well, and was fun to an extant (I only used the sword). The characters were nice to interact with. Dusa was cheesy af but entertaining enough. The music was good. The main issues for me are the grind and the repetitive bosses. Did they fix any of it at all?

Icarus’s romance just feels like the right one.
Nemesis just feels more like a big sister, Eris is just a one night hatefuck at best, and Moros kind of works in an “awkward teens fumble around together for the first time” way but it’s made weird by him being effectively handed to you by his sisters and him having another woman he’s fated to marry.
But Icarus is the guy that Mel lost her arm for and yet she has no regrets about doing it, and despite being a mortal he’s still charging into battle to help protect her. It’s clear he’s the one.

Other than that, nothing really, it was pretty good. I think it was a lot more fun than the first game, the heat system felt worth it, every weapon had at least one subtype that wasn't stinky, chaos trials being goofy gimmick runs was fun. I think the emphasis on mid-range pokes helped with the endgame readability issues these games have when shits just flying all over the screen and you're prone to losing your cursor.
Melinoe could've been easily insufferable but was fine. Granted, making your female lead just super polite and stoic seems to be the indie meta these days, but beats girlboss mcmachismo. I remember the initial reveal trailer, it really did seem like she was going to be pure cocky girlboss, but no she's just there, soft-spoken and cute, gets the mickey taken out of her for not having 1/10th of the charisma Zagreus has.

Apart from the writing - which wasn't insufferably bad, just weak - my only real criticism is that I wish casting on cursor was an unlockable arcana or something rather than a boon you have to fish for.

Yeah, doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Too much grinding. I like where in The Binding of Isaac (only played as Isaac or Azazel) you get to an ending, unlock an item, and it's unlocked forever. No resources and number counters to fill. Also the grinding in BoI is nearly nonexistant unless you aimed to unlock all characters or 100% it. The game also has way more variety of weapons than Hades ever will. Every run in that game felt fresh and was fun, being randomly generated with random item spawns that forced you to adapt and play differently, only bolstered by secret achievements that you randomly unlock by mistake, which give you even MORE items to play around with; it was always a nice surprise finding one. I probably sunk a good ~80-120 hours in this game, it was so good.
The music, too. But Hades 1 and Hades 2's music is good also.

Was never interested in Vampire Survivors likes though Gungeon looked cool so I might pirate it. But I agree, Hades' high mobility and snappy combat triumph most roguelites around. I actually srarted with a Hades-clone: Curse of the Dead Gods (pirated it. It's mechanically similar, but not as good as Hades) before succumbing and buying Hades. I make it a rule not to pirate any Supergiant Games games out of respect, so it took me a long time to play Hades.
