Doesn't make it build faster, but inputting a direction when boosting does make you slide and drift far longer. How often you should go for boosts is really based on what vehicle you are on. Some of them don't really need to often, others like the wagon star actually can't at all.
Also a new feature, you can hold back and brake in order to quick stop. Really useful.

How exactly do you speed up an go faster? Are you supposed to just spam the B button boosts? Or waggle the control stick all the time? What about easily reversing or turning around in city trial?

My only disappointment is that they left all the real interesting vehicles out of the demo. Other than that, the racing is solid, and City Trial is as fun as ever.

At least in this demo wagon star is super good, weaknesses don't mean much when you can just pick a stadium event where they don't matter

If Stadiums are limited to 8, they need to have an 8 player 1 Stadium matchmaking mode option.

The mini-races and derbys within City Trial can have 16 players in an even more cramped event than the stadiums

Winged Star has always been pretty mid.
Certainly not the worst star but its not even the best at flight.
Neither is the paper star, but its pretty decent. And some of the best vehicles in the original still require some specific item priority to really work well. Its not a weird concept.

You build youself up with stats in the city trail then use that build in a stadium, city trail isn't a preamble its the main mode, the winner can usually be determined before the stadium with how your stats are spread.

There are other modes too but the demo only has online city trail and offline races.

Well it has a racing mode, its just its battle mode is more popular.
The items are either things to attack people, temporary buffs, or permanent stat upgrades. You attempt to create a strong machine by scrounging for stats and vehicles in a short time limit with some random events interspersing that usually offer stat rewards. At the end you do a random stadium (or in the sequel's case, you pick 1 of 4 random stadiums) and try to use your machine to win. Whoever built the best machine for the task wins, barring anything like actual skill at doing the stadium.

I think it should've been emphasized more that the meat of the game is city trail. People came in and were expecting a traditional racing game like Mario kart

A lot of the newbies don’t know that the strat to kill boss enemies in city trial is to always look for ramps and hit their head or eye. I mean, the original only had Dyna Blade, but that strat works against both her and Kracko alongside the giant wheelie as well. Safer, you do more damage per hit (meaning you can still the final hit more easily), and you get some bonus items for doing it.
