Anon, you're actually retarded. There is NOTHING stupid about that sentence. I don't think there's any real value in me explaining it to you more than I already have, but I guess I can try so you walk away with a better understanding of English. So here's what you're strawmanning me as saying
>>I don't care that society thinks that age gaps are gross, I agree.
This sentence is written in a strange way. You're right that someone who starts that sentence that way would normally go on to declare they take the opposite stance, but they could still actually declare they take the previously stated stance if the emphasis is on them "not caring what society thinks." To simply say "I agree" after it would be confusing as it makes people second guess what it is exactly you're agreeing with. It sounds like you're agreeing with maybe something else that was stated before the sentence. A better sentence would clarify what it is you agree with, like this
>I don't care that society thinks that age gaps are gross, I find them gross myself.
See, here the emphasis is on you not caring about society. This hypothetical anon doesn't care that SOCIETY finds it gross, HE finds it gross. Of course, my actual sentence didn't provide emphasis. It provided something else: an apposition. I put a comment within the sentence itself, right in the middle, between commas. Here's my sentence
>It's not a conscious decision, I don't care what society thinks, it just feels off somehow
Now let's remove the apposition.
>It's not a conscious decision, it just feels off somehow
That's perfectly clear. I'm not thinking about the ethics of the situation, I intuitively dislike it. Do you know what I would happen if I said that and left it there? Someone, like you, would respond with
>dude, that's just society getting in your head, fuck them, teenagers are tight
And you would be incorrect, prompting me to have to say I don't care what society thinks.
But now we don't. :)
