They're creatively bankrupt. They *have* nothing of their own. They must co-opt and contaminate something that already exists, built by better craftsmen, and try to build upon it while denying the original source as much as possible.

It's stupid because the main story around centered around fighting the Reapers is 90% of the reason people care about the trilogy. I know there's technically world-building beyond that, but don't get it twisted all the world building is there to lend authenticity to the stakes of the main conflict. It's not like Fallout where the franchise is much more setting-oriented so lots of derivative content can coexist in their own self-contained stories.

You could possibly make a prequel work because of the established lore around the First Contact War and the all the intrigue that goes into setting up the original trilogy. But a sequel is just stupid. There's virtually no hook that would interest fans beyond the mere IP branding.

This is the result of an unholy compromise between corporate and creative interests. Producers would only fund a show with a major IP attached to but the writers/director insisted on the creative freedom to tell their own story so we get this shit. Someone should have put their foot down and made everyone pick a lane instead of this half-baked crap.
