I will take the bait, but I seriously pity the kids that weren't alive for the golden years of videogames (late 90's to early 2010's imo). Fortnite and mtx based games hit videogame developers like fentanyl in low income neighborhoods in the US, they all got hooked up instantly and started following trends thinking money was everything. For as much as people love to glaze Elden Ring or more modern games, to be really honest I don't think it can even come close to prime CS 1.6 community servers with tons of mods and audios, or 2007 Runescape, or early WoW, or playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for the first time and getting actually hooked despite the jank.

Seeing the graphical improvement of late 90's graphics in the N64 or PS1 and PC games like Quake II or Diablo, to early 2000's consoles and games like MGS:2, Mario Sunshine, CoD 2 or Half Life 2, to the PS3/360 era of Halo 3, Crysis, Bioshock or GTA IV was magic. People were hopeful about videogames.

I had a PS1 at 7yo and played games like super shot soccer, Spyro or MvC2, then got a PS2 at 11yo and played God of War, Burnout 3 or GTA SA, then a 360 at 14 and played Halo 3, Mass Effect or Gears of War. Over the span of 10 years or so I saw how they surpassed peak after peak.

Fortnite and GTA V had existed for so long and shown no improvements, no change, no new amazing technology, nothing. Raytracing is a meme and a joke of a promise. Every new game looks like shit, everything has been outsourced to UE5, every company has been milking and remaking every possible series because they ran out of ideas, or anyone with a glimpse of genius leaves the companies or is kicked. Every game tries to nostalgia bait in some shape, no one takes risks. Big games aren't even happy with selling the product, they know they have to hook you up with cosmetics because they burned a 300 mill usd for a shittier looking game that runs like ass, plus you know the entirety of the content will be behind paywalls.

It's such a sad state of affairs.
