What was Halo like in its peak popularity?

I can't speak for Xbox friends but on PC, it was very chill. Halo CE had a lot of that PC gaming culture that you'd expect from something like TF2 where people would gather around and play even one match for an hour just chilling and had fun. The sweatier game-modes were still a lot of fun, but the pistol meta was established almost right away.
People talked a lot more back then too, particularly using the in-game chat.

Fun. It was fun.
To compare it to another game, peak halo 3 was almost like peak WC3 because they both had a massive custom game scene, and the modes people were able to make on xbox were fairly impressive for the limitations. Every time I would get home and check the recent played list, most of it was full of people playing a custom game in halo 3, usually infection, but on a unique map.

Halo was the most fun gaming community I've ever been a part of. I've never seen one like it since, where there was a subsection of people doing montages, or making youtube sketches, or custom maps, or artistic photos in photomode, etc. It was the right amount of friendly but also nasty. I could spend entire days just consuming Halo content without even playing a match, because the community was so active.

Shit was cash. Halo 3, MW2, Black Ops, Reach and Battlefield Bad Company 2 were the peak of bro shooters, and online gaming by extension. Really the only thing that came close to the felling of that era since the 360 was 2015 era CS.

Extremely social. Mics everywhere and everyone actually used them instead of just callouts. You'd get random friend requests and messages and invites all the time, if it was a close game expect a voice message from a garbled 5 dollar mic calling you a gay cheater. Tons of people playing splitscreen in multiplayer because people actually hung out in person and all played on the same tv. You could say whatever you wanted and half of every lobby was 12 year olds and the other half was college age dudebros so you can imagine how that went, but really Halo was a bit more friendlier than CoD and Gears of War.

I wonder if there actually is any online gaming communities active now that's as good as Halo was, or if it really was as good as it gets. I've played everything, from CS, RTS, BRs, mech games, etc, but I've never liked a community as much as Halo. I guess maybe the fighting game community always looked pretty cool from the outside, especially Street Fighter 4, but I never actually played them

Speculation is that all Halo campaigns and multiplayer are separate titles going forward.
So Campaign Evolved doesn't have multiplayer because whatever multiplayer live service thing they are working on is supposed to scratch that itch, and would launch around the same time as it. Maybe it would eventually be a collection of all the (updated/modernized) multiplayer content from CE and 2 and 3

The magic of Halo 3 was that everyone played it.

Voice chat was fucking crazy back in the day since it was always on so it was constantly picking up shit. I legitimately heard some kid's mom screaming at the top her lungs that she was going to stab their cat because it wouldn't shut up while the kid was sniffling over the mic. Then you had prepubescent fuck stains trying to be cool over the mic. It wasn't Halo, but I was playing SS2 co-op and there was some dumb shit 13 year old trying to pretend he had a girlfriend watching him play by putting on a falsetto and moving his mic away from his mouth to make it sound like she was complementing him and telling him he was cute and sexy.

I've played and continue to play a lot of Infinite and I like it.
I expect the new mp Halo they're working on would try to appeal to both those who want modern mechanics like sprint, and those who don't- which Infinite already does to some extent with the Delta Arena modes. Delta Arena removes things like sprint and clamber and makes some other tweaks, trying to play more like 2 and 3, and it's pretty good

I played at least 12,000 games of Gaylo 2. The main difference at the beginning was the competition. Mainly, there was none. Every single one of my friends was playing Halo 2. (My only guess is that its like s1 fortnite for zoomers)

The lack of youtube or a general knowledge about competitive shooters made a lot of the strategies home grown. OG WOW had this magic too. Just a lot more chaotic. Halo 2 with Halo 3’s forge would have made it an all time great.

It was very fun and each games release was like a major major event. Halo was the biggest thing there was at the time, outselling any other piece of media.

PC version was my only window to online shooting game. It was pretty fun playing on that exclusive maps. I had fun playing Race, Sniper only, Rocket Only, Cops and Robbers, Zombie, and basic CTF. It was saddening to me when Halo 2 came out, the traffic dramatically drop and I couldn't join in the Halo 2 fun because I was poor. I was amazed that my old PC could run Halo at the time.

If you were in high school when Halo 3 came out and you had real life friends that was the most lit multiplayer shit ever hands down. Don't get me wrong I've played countless hours of MMOs that were great but Halo 3 was a giant standout.
