Was buggy as hell back in the day. A lot of quests didn't give you the exp properly so you could get gimped. It crashed all the time. Constantly. Just nothing but crashes. And some of the choices were just completely bugged and didn't carry over properly. And it also didn't run well either.

So I'd say mechanically it was pretty poorly put together.

Actually it is. It's very short, it's all about ambiance and atmosphere, you can finish the spooky hotel in like 5 minutes, and you get an artifact if you know where it is. In different playthrough it's not a huge deal.

Even the sewers aren't a huge deal in different playthrough, because you know they're here. They're a pain in the ass but at least you're forwarned it's a huge pain in the ass, because you played the game before.

the spooky hotel has kino ambience and atmoshere, sure, but he said replaying it. those are lost on a replay where you know whats in there and just zoom past it, and you can not deny that the whole quest is designed and paced around the idea that the player will be moving through it slowly because they are scared. When you aren't it's just a gag in your face every 3 seconds and an annoying vase/pot/pan smacking you in every room. That boiler room faggotry has gotten me killed in a couple replays too

I beat it regularly without Celerity and much difficulty.

Aim for the head, zombies are the only enemy that actually take bonus damage on headshots and will go down in one or two hits from any weapon if you get a headshot.

Only clear the zombies at the gate, then run to the other one to clear it, and repeat. Don't try to kill every zombie in the area. You don't need to kill them all, just guard the gates long enough for the timer to run out.

You shouldn't have much difficulty as long as you do those things. The gates are barely damaged at the end of the mission for me.

I gotta agree, overall was fun though ocean hotel rocks. the setting and lore is pretty good. the characters are pretty varied and good at that but most don't really do much and the levels start to blend together as the story converges on just do random shit but the princess is in a different castle

I replayed it just before 2 came out because I wanted to play a good vtmb game.

And as I said, it can be finished in 5 minutes. It's a quick segment. You can just run through all of it, watch the pretty fireworks, get your artifact, and get back to Jeanette in 5 minutes. It's not a huge time hog.

Grout's mansion IS a huge time hog on replays. And the Hollywood sewers, of course. But I've played the game 5 times, and at Grout's mansion I always spend 15 minutes relearning all the weird puzzles and stuff to do. It has a good narrator, tho, so it's not boring.

Yeah, I've seen other people have tried and everything I tried with the weapon and model files just does nothing or makes it stop working. Pretty unfortunate. Luckily it does so much damage that just one or two hits is enough but it could be a lot better. I even tried simply swapping it out for the regular unarmed attacks but it only makes it stop working completely.

I always thought people disliked the sewers for being a bit unbalanced on combat but apparently some people just hate the puzzles. I went through the sewers once to say I did it, firearm focused Ventrue. Cleared it out completely over what felt like forever, the last masquerade violation fallen to my last magazine. It was tense enough for me to enjoy it but also tedious enough for me to not care to do it again.

It's not properly foreshadowed, that's all. Even non-combat characters can go through it, no problem. But you're just thrown into the sewers without anyone telling you how big a pain in the ass it is, and it can take an entire hour to clear through. A lot of the core systems are bad. On a mechanical level the game is basically a bad Deus Ex clone. The core appeal is the engaging and enjoyable sidequests. It's basically like a series of narrative episodes. The main plot is not very good. The game mechanics, the RPG stuff, isn't very good.

Without mods it's a bit buggy and unfinished.

The beach house, at the very start of the game, has several approaches towards getting the Astrolite:
1) Kill everything in a rampage and take it;
2) Talk your way into getting it and get it at a discount / leaving without paying;
3) Turn off the breaker in the back, incapacitate the guy they send out to repair it, and use the cover of darkness to steal the explosives.

Chinatown is where the cracks really start to show and the Giovanni segment makes one realize exactly when during development Troika was being shut down.

The sewers are fine, except for this part. If you noclip out of the map, you'll see that it's literally a prefab maze like you'd see in an Unreal Engine indie game with tons of annoying enemies copypasted everywhere.
Furthermore, if you go down the wrong path at the start and reach the terminal, it needs a key that you can only find on a corpse on the other path, meaning you have to backtrack, fight even more guys, collect the key, then go ALL the way back. It takes like ten minutes (five minutes each way) and it's incredibly boring and annoying.
If the game had a sprint button it would be more acceptable.

1 What does nosferatu have to do with abomination in sewers, it was created to zerg rush nos, not made from them.
2 Nosferatu can be changed with fleshcrafting, just they will revert back to original ugly shape next night, or only if it was used to make them look les hideous, would need to consult rulebooks. Idea was to not have easy fix for nosferatu bane.

You basically singlehandedly destroy the Sabbat in LA and it's super satisfying to dust them and their evil leader. I'm glad there's one level that's basically all combat with a unique boss at the end.
I think it's just a sore spot for people because they don't put points into combat or revisit shops frequently enough to buy the best armor as soon as it becomes available, plus it's sandwiched between the sewers (the worst level in the game) and the temple/tower (fine levels and mostly stealthable but still combat heavy if you can't stealth).
It's actually a really cool map.

I too liked hotel level, it's main problem was being combat oriented level after combat oriented level, and then following up combat oriented level. Endgame have too much combat oriented level, but at least bossfight can be skipped with flamethrower, unlike Ming and Sheriff.
If game had more time in the oven it's possible you could have joined sabbat and didn't have like 4 or 5 combat oriented levels back to back.

Nah they were disabled because if you spend points on your character sheet and then swap back to the clan select screen and change your history you keep any spent bonus points, so it's really easy to cheat your stats. So easy that a lot of players do it without even realizing.

I actually just finished this game yesterday. I had never played past the Elizabeth Dane before this playthrough.
The zombies where easy. The sewers were braindead easy. I genuinely don't understand how people have trouble with those sections. Are they not investing into combat skills? Are they not keeping some blood bags around just in case? Did they not explore so they didn't have many artifacts?

The last time I tested it I noticed that there were a lot of changes to the sounds in various levels. Some restored dialogue lines that don't make sense. One of the Russian mafia guys had his clothes a different color for some reason. I haven't done a full playthrough with it in a long time to see what else it changes.

It seems like it's not as bad as it used to be. It used to change music, how Disciplines work, etc. but it's still not just bug fixes.

When you are exploring and find an extra item, you feel good and you know it wil come in handy later, it's harmony between gameplay and fluff, compare to the nothing feel of finding elixirs and other collectibles in the VTMB2, it feels like it doesn't matter at all, because it doesn't.

I’d say the combat sucks and the missions are more linear than I remembered. You can’t really avoid combat, since a lot of missions across the map involve fighting. However, there are plenty of high points that make this game endearing and fun to play. The fan patches really did a good job too. Not sure how good the final nights, or the clan quest mod are gonna be however,

They're still okay under 5. The shotguns are alright even lower than that but otherwise it's an issue of range/firing speed. It's pretty easy to get 6 or 7 in gun skill early enough though without having to dump all your points into it. Toreador is gun clan with celerity and auspex buffing the guns like crazy. Guns are also held back by fact you have to heavy invest in them skill wise and it's simply not worth it early game because there are no good guns in early game.
