Raikou was ordered killed by her father as a baby because she was born a hybrid demon child thanks to the involvement of Gozu-Tennou (who in Fate is actually Indra from the Indian pantheon but I digress).
She only survived because her mother took her to a bunch of monks to keep her hidden away, but her father killed her mother due to that. Eventually her father learned of a young girl living with the monks with immense strength, and realized who she must be, took her back in and trained her to basically be his weapon of war.
Pic related is teen Raikou, aka Ushi-Gozen, her from when her father was using her as a weapon. She was desperate for his approval so he demanded her to live as a man (which is why history remembers Raikou as a man in Fate), and fight for him using her demon power. Doing so made her hate herself but she also wanted her fathers approval, so it completely fucked up her mind and she's basically suicidal.
Eventually she came across Kintoki who she took in as an adoptive son and along with him stopping from her almost killing herself to get rid of her demonic side, and the passing of her father and her succeeding her fathers position, she was able to live more freely, and she found happiness in taking on a motherly role. This is why she tries so hard to be a good mother, even if she's not good at it, and also why dealing with her is like dealing with a bull where she might just see red and go on a demonic rampage suddenly.
