There are 2 different modes with singleplayer content. Fully animated and voice acted Story mode with never before seen story. Chronicle Mode which lets you play all the matches and experience story from the previous game titles. Basically you are creating ultimate team in Chronicle mode and eventually go up against secret unknown entity.

Hard to say, it's half mother of all recaps and half completely new stuff, which are unrelated. You'd likely be very, very confused booting up the legacy mode as a newcomer since the series goes so off the rails but fundamentally it's just shonen soccer

I fell in love with Inazuma early this year. I knew of it existence, but since I don't like soccer, i never paid it much attention. I guess what got me into the series at first was the Endou x Natsumi ship. I watched the first 26 episodes, played a bit of the first game, but got filtered by the ghost team and quit, played Victory Road Demo, and now I am here. For me, the wait wasn't nearly as long, but I'm looking forward to the game. A shame there's not gonna be physical release for the Switch 2

You make your OC in the Inazuma Station (town building) mode, then can use it as a player (not protagonist) both in story and chronicle mode.
Chronicle mode starts with its own story, in order to save the world from some hyperdimensional monster you have to travel to the past and recruit the best players ever, which is just a pretext to relive the events of the previous games while adding some extra twists here and there.
There are a new game + mode and something else called "extend story" which is probably a postgame that will tie chronicle mode and story mode together.

The first series of characters have completely localized names (maybe others do too but only noticed this on some subs for the original).

So someone like Endou Mamoru ends up as Mark Evans. A lot of people grew up with dub names cause they watched the show on air. There is an option for "Japanese Enligsh" names though, not sure whats the default there. So incase you're wondering what that option is for or why people might be using different names.

Focus Battles were easy, but weren't explained very well.

As a defender you had to hit the button to make your character glow, when they did you could steal the ball off them.
If the opposing guy ran into your hands while you were glowing, you got the steal.

If you try to move the hands into them after they're already beside your defender, it doesn't count. They have to run into them while you're pressing the defend button.
