The secret to American cartoons is that there hasn't really been american cartoons since like the 50's Nearly everything outside of Disneys own in house studios was almost all produced by japanese or korean sweatshop studios. The Transformers movie fucks so hard because it was basically every talented mecha animator or storyboard artist getting to go apeshit with an absurdly high budget.

I re-watched a handful of episodes from the later season with my kid, and I was honestly shocked at how deadpan and cynical he was sometimes. In some situations where Optimus would be steadfast, Rodimus would just shrug and go "welp, i'm out of ideas, guess we're dead" and pass off the duty of saving everyone to someone else.

I think the franchise could work really well in a borderlands sort of gameplay format. A bunch of parts and skills to change how your bot performs/plays/grows. Start off as a basic bitch drone, get better stuff from taking parts from other bots you destroy.

No, the story was that little men (remember Micronauts? Same thing.) used the robots to fight evil aliens that never got any toys. Megatron was meant to be "and you can help!" by having your own transforming weapon. Also, two of cassettes for the recorder (Soundwave) turned into a bike and helicopter for the little men to ride; Hasbro skipped those.

Meanwhile, the villians for Diaclone were evil alien robot bugs, who became the Insecticons.

Soundwave as Megatron's most loyal, has a bit of a rivalry with starscream
Shockwave basically as a commander in megatron's absence

In some ways it's not about hierarchy as much as it is power and location. Decepticon hierarchy is ultimately decided by might-makes-right, meaning the leadership is always prone to instability. It also changes depending on the continuity. IIRC, transformers has like 13 continuities and all of them are canon; the setting is an insane clusterfuck.

Mostly just time pressure. The massive 2 decade long gold rush on animation in the 70s and 80s was apeshit. Especially during the Toy Cartoon bubble in the 80s. That shit was insane, they were needing to churn out 52+ episodes for some shows in like 3-6 months between the toy line finalization and holiday toy launches. To make those time tables they'd regularly need a dozen or more studios working on shit. There literally werent enough animators in the USA to keep up with the demand.
