deltarune, sincerity and internet culture
i find it weird when people champion undertale/deltarune as the ultimate examples of sincerity in gaming, knowing the origins of toby's sense of humor
specially when sites like tumblr always had irony posion and even people being cynical towards anime
something tells me there could be a chance of deltarune having a cameo of dril or mega64
the real "tumblrisms" of ut/dr aren't the furry characters or the lgbt elements, more likely they're the type of humor when you consider the roots
(i'd also bring up the differences between "tumblr cringe" and "deviantart cringe" where tumblr always had overt self-awareness, self-deprecating humor and even some cultural overlaps with somethingawful while deviantart feels alien in comparison because it's weird kids not even thinking about how the outside world sees them)
(could also be because tumblr is full of millenials who also invest in politics to feel more mature than they are)

it feels like people nowadays (and maybe as a side effect of "internet brain rot" or troll's remorse) define sincerity as "anti-cringe culture", as if simply including colorfull furry characters makes your work sincere
so by this logic: david lynch's art for example can't be sincere because it doesn't have colorfull furries or poorly drawn anime characters

but i also believe toby himself might be aware of this, which explains why he'd ever want to go to japan because barely does irony exist in anything from japan
maybe he even sees pieces of irony and the likes on his western fans
but he probably doesn't entirely regret his history with tumblr if it got him into things he did like

toby fox made a song about one of the little boys from homestuck getting pregnant, and then put it in pokemon
he is operating on 12 levels of irony meant to conceal his degenerate sexual fetishes

His style of humor was funny in undertale but is totally stale in deltarune or when replaying undertale for a second time.
>Go to new location
>Encounter boss mcfunnyman
>Puzzle a five year old could solve
>Encounter boss mcfunnyman again
>Slightly harder puzzle
>Fight/spare the boss
>Rinse and repeat until the end of the game
I think if there were multiple routes through the underground instead of the game being linear it would be much more replayable. But then you'd have to triple the amount of content.

Undertale and Deltarune definitely aren't sincere in the aesthetic sense of the word. I think that it's more accurate to say that they sincerely pander to a specific cultural niche: Tumblr, SA, Homestuck, Tails Gets Trolled, etc., Internet culture and communities so saturated with self-aware absurdity that it's "hip" to treat them with sincerity. Toby's "sincerity" comes from an inherently ironic, self-aware juxtaposition, and I don't think that's true sincerity. It's one big in-joke.

tl;dr I agree, thanks for your autistic rant OP

The only thing I know about these games is that it's easy to make the people that actually play them cry by being nice to them.

irony and sincerity aren't mutually incompatible, you can tell a sincere story which happens to employ ironic humor. when people talk about "irony poisoning" they don't mean "this guy's sense of humor is stuck in the early 2010s" they mean "this guy is so afraid of being perceived as one of the weird deviantart kids that he refuses to show any authentic emotion for fear he'll be mocked by the cooler somethingawful kids". deltarune is considered sincere because despite all the wacky jokes there's still a deeply sentimental emotional core at its heart and toby doesn't undercut that stuff with "haha dw i don't REALLY care about the characters i know it's just a dumb video game for babies". the big emotional moments are always played entirely straight, and even the memeier characters like berdly or spamton are treated with sincerity when their ironic masks drop
anyway in the interest of being sincere: i enjoyed your essaypost! breath of fresh air on this board. keep it up, anon

You and many others have been misled by the term "irony poisoning" to believe that irony is in itself poisonous. This is untrue (or at least it's subjective, if you just really don't like ironic settings and pretexts).
There are plenty of stories that employ ironic humor but are sincere at their core. Characters and settings can be dressed up in absurdity without becoming nothing but a joke. That's what happens when something transitions from ironic to irony-poisoned, when the joke becomes the whole substance of the work and it's no longer capable of taking itself (or being taken) seriously.

I can agree with the first point, in the sense that they're metafiction and metafiction is inherently insincere (the game knows that you know that it's "just a game")
But the second point is totally off base, UT/DR has found widespread mainstream appeal and success outside of those niche communities, and even if internet memes/culture is a big part of its aesthetic that is not its complete substance
