hides imperfections, unnaturally straight lines and sharp angles

Just like bloom and DOF, it's meant to mimic the typical CAMERA FLAWS.

Ironic, since it's the sort of shit film makers have tried to GET RID OFF the past 100 years.

This shit was everywhere from 2014 to 2016 or so and then it died. Good riddance

makes for a good negative status effect but shouldn't be baseline

It's just an alternative solution to jaggies. It looks passable in motion until you get a closer look but that applies to other methods too.

The only valid uses are games that use a camera perspective or huds that are clearly suppose to be tech like helmet huds. Everything else is movie slop

I like it in motion, but it ruins screenshots. I wish stuff like shadowplay could control it and disable it for the shot.

This. As some kind of visual indicator I think it would be great. Say your character has some sixth sense. When someone is lying to you, you get some chromatic aberration. If it's some kind of status effect that makes your character feel off, sure. There are a lot of interesting ways to use it. As a filter and it's on all the time because you think things need more color it's awful. It's called "aberration" for a reason.

People that slap chromatic aberration on everything to make it pop have never improved their skill with art past figuring out how to make drop shadows in photoshop.

Yeah games can look really good with the right use of chromatic aberration. It's the big reason why P.T. looked as good as it did.

Trick is to find the right excuse for it. If the game already involves cameras you're good. Or if it's a horror game it is worth just going "fuck it, this looks creepy".

If I had a genie with three wishes, I would wish for every faggot who ever put this in their game to have the effect permanently applied to their own eyeballs

GTA5 did it (without option to turn off unless modded) so everyone did it too.
