The only shooter to apply action/fighting game fundamentals where attacking and reloading is an act of commitment and a risk you can get punished for. Then the added wrinkle of shooting body parts for stuns and melee attacks having i-frames that rewards you for playing aggressively, again encouraging risk management. Good post. Also, as much as I like RE5, I really like dislike the addition of quick inventory reloading. It's kinda fun to be able to reload in the middle of a melee attack animation, but it also removes the need to reload manually , so that whole dynamic from RE4 is completely gone, which sucks. I really don't think we'll ever get another TPS as well designed as OG RE4, sadly.

RE4 works so well, because it was built on the fundamentals of original RE1-3.
That stationary, "turret-like" aiming and shooting was there already in 1996, and created this perfect risk-vs-reward design whenever you decided to engage enemies.

it holds up shockingly well , the aiming system is great and the gunplay feels so impactful. I just couldnt enjoy re4make because of the changes it made. Enemies are bullet sponges that grab spam so much it made melee attacks horrible to preform. They also felt way more difficult to stun reliably to even consider going to them anyway. Re4 only needed a quick weapon swap option added to be perfect

The real genius behind RE4 and Dead Space is that the aiming systems were so advanced. Every other third-person shooter has you controlling a reticule in the center, making it feel like you're aiming a box-shaped camera. In these games, the laser sight can be moved all across the screen away from the center, making it feel like you are in control of Leon and Isaac's hands and arms, not some disembodied camera man standing behind them. It made combat feel more visceral and it made the overall feel much more immersive. This isn't even super complicated stuff but many people these days will refuse to wrap their heads around it.

The feedback from enemies reacting in a consistent manner to every shot feels rewarding at first. In the long run though it makes the game totally uninteresting because all challenge and danger is removed. Dead space is still the goat for integrating that system in a much more engaging way. Dead space is the perfect blend between consistent reactions but also requiring increased commitment and not instant gratification and thus triviality. Rem4ke is better than the OG and any dead space game because it turns out that rng>consistency. The rng health and stun triggere in Rem4ke force you to make decisions bullet by bullet rather than being able to literally plan out an entire room like you are playing a turn based game in the OG.

If you really are hardstuck on the OG they made a whole genre of games that predate the OG you would love to play: rail shooters. Don't try to ruin 3ps by whining for your overly casual crutch ganeplay. Go play the genre built around what you are asking for more of.

To offset the rng involved in the rem4ke the devs gave you a parry and made ducking a reactable option to grabs. You are still just as invincible in rem4ke as you were in the OG you just actually have to adapt to enemy behavior rather than being able to invalidate enemy behavior entirely.

Og 4 is a good game. But it literally is piss easy and basically a solved game. It was also never really designed to be challenging.
Ive played it to death across multiple different platforms over the years but I prefer rem4ke now because it actually presents a challenge. Ive gotten s+ rank runs in that game down to do them back to back, and it is now my go-to time killer game.
The rem4ke made capcom get their head out of their ass and make a proper good action horror experience instead of whatever bullshit they were doing with remak3 and village.

The remake removed the depth out of reloading. In the original reloading at the wrong time could mean death since you were stationary and couldn't cancel out of it. It created a relationship of risk and decision-making in the gameplay. But thanks to the remake allowing you to move out of harm's way even while reloading, there's no longer any decision-making associated with reloading. You always move while reloading. Why wouldn't you? It's now nothing more than a momentary halt in the action.

There's a webm of MatthewMatosis playing OG4 and it shows him dying because he reloaded when chainsaw guy was right in front of him. If this was the remake, he would've just moved out of the way and suffered no consequences.

RE4 is where the franchise turned to shit. Absolute self-indulgent chuunibyou 2kool4skool weeb writing. Hordes of dumb monsters coming at you with virtually unlimited ammo. Absolute cringe dialogues, one-liners. Aura farming scenes. Style over substance flashy action trash.

The O.G, classic REs are actually campy. It's like an homage to B-movies, just like how the FMV intro looks and feels like Sam Raimi Super 8 films. RE4 is responsible for the direction they took for RE5 and fucking RE6. Weeb games were absolutely awful in this era. The original RE4 PC version by Ubisoft is absolute horseshit with completely broken lighting, one of the worst PC ports of all time
The re-released PC version (Ultimate Edition) is the base for all future ports, is pretty solid all things considered, updated textures are generally good with a few wonky ones
But really if you're on PC there's no reason not to play with the HD project mod, it's so good

The Switch HD port is genuinely embarrassing, even after the update. I'm talking a full five seconds to open your inventory. Sometimes the music just stops while it's loading. And any time a cutscene has a QTE, the video lags and the audio gets out of sync. Then the video has to catch up for the QTE to trigger. How can you fuck up so badly? It's a two decade old game. That's literally the only way I played RE4 after unlocking it. I've played OG RE4 to death, a minimum of however many typewriter slots it has because I was a dumbass kid and didn't rotate saves. It was 1 save file per playthrough and i know I wrapped back around the typewriter. It's stupidly easy on every difficulty.

Like I said the purpose of this is to keep pistols useful at range and 1v1 scenarios but when the odds start stacking against you, you have to make use of the rest of your kit.
