The game seems insanely overrated and overhyped to me. The reviews are pure hyperbole. They would have you believe that this is the equivalent of a long-lost 8bit console library of all-time greats with games that would stand on their own as individual releases.
Let's be real though. Most 8-bit games are bad and not worth playing today. The ones that are still playable are the best of the best: Mario 3, river city ransom, Super Dodge Ball, Excitabike, Blaster Master, Etc. These games are nowhere near that quality. Most of them are mid at the absolute best.
For example, there is a shmup called Star Waspir. I have over 50 shmups in my steam library, and there is not a single one of them that I wouldn't prefer playing instead of Star Waspir. Nor does it compare favorably to NES games. This isn't Gradius or Life Force. Even Star Soldier is a lot better. If I bought Star Waspir for 40 cents (its pro-rated cost), I would refund it.
I went through about a quarter of the games within the refund window and Avianos was the only one of those that was any good (and it was way lacking in content). I doubt there are much more than 5 good games total in the whole set, and you can easily grab 5 (or more) games on steam for less than 20 bucks total that will be much better than those and not have to wade through 45 games of crap to find the good ones. This probably would have been better as a 16-bit collection where the bar to make a good game isn't as high.

Yeah I'm not reading all that but the games are well designed. You're talking about arcade or something, the beatemup in this is mechanically good, the horizontal shooter is good, the vertical one is kind of a shitpost

But I mean this game has a legit Ghouls & Ghosts clone that's, again, mechanically well designed, they knocked it out of the park. It's just short but who else is doing that? Stop complaining like a bpd bitch over getting more of what you want.

The games aren't as good as the best full fleshed out games of their time, but most of them are solid. It does a good job at being a simulator of having a big box of random games where you have some classics and some duds, but even the duds have something to offer if you give them a chance. Like I would never buy Avianos if I saw it on the shelf at a store, but most people's collections of games would have random shit like an awful Monopoly port alongside Mario 3 and that's what Avianos represents.
I think it's best played switching between games frequently and going back to them later.

Buying bad games then not playing them is NOT a personality

Well I was hyped from day one and can't wait for a decent discount to get it. Vambrace was the one that caught my attention but I'm looking forward to give every title a try

UFO 50 is great because it lets you try a ton of genres for little to no cost to see if they interest you. Almost nobody will like all 50 (or even 45) of the games but if you don't find a couple fun you should unironically give up on gaming and find a new hobby

It was my indie GOTY for 2024. Put over 260 hours into it, 33 cherries, 39 golds. Mini and Max is one of the coolest fucking "metroidvanias" I've ever played with an ingenious fast travel system built in. I wish Pingolf had another two or three 18-hole courses. Mortol was fun as fuck. Party House is amazing and frustrating all at once. Valbrace was the first dungeon crawler I've ever enjoyed, although the lack of unique enemies was noticeable by the end. Campanella 2's randomized layouts actually felt cool, but its caves are a noticeable weakpoint.

How long did Mini and Max take you? I'm only 2 hours in but I'm genuinely intimidated by its scope.

pingolf is fucking based, whether its the music or the stage designs. beating that game was surprisingly satisfying. it unironically deserves a sequel.

This is the most reasonable take in the thread so far. Most of the games are really just novel takes on existing genres and practically every genre is represented in the collection in some way. Yea, there’s some “bad” ones and I’d argue there’s a few that are basically memes (Waldorf’s Journey for example) but overall it’s very solid. My faves:

>Rail Heist
>Campanella 3
>Paint Chase
>Attactics
>Pingolf
>Party House
>Ninpek
>Bushido Ball
>Night Manor
>Caramel Caramel
>Fist Hell

Some of them I know I’ll just never beat. Star Waspir is just too fucking hard for me and I can’t get into most of the RPGs, but I feel like I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth.

I got the first ending(gold) in 3 hours 15 minutes, then got the second ending in 5 and a half hours. But most of that time was just trying to figure out how to get the second ending, the in-game hint on where to go for that isn't very good unless I missed another, and I wouldn't hold it against anyone to look it up.
Just talk to every NPC and go where they tell you to, and shrink down on suspicious pixels, and also a lot of items seem to be to one screen next to towns and stuff so check a bit around key areas. Also the dog can sniff the ground and tell you where stuff is but I forget when you unlock that ability.

All you have to do is find 5 games you like and you'll get your money's worth. That's it. And I really like at least 30 of them. Warptank was the first one I beat and I knew from that game early on that this bundle or whatever you want to call it is special.

Waldorf's Journey is a spin on launcher type games which was a popular genre of flash game. not sure if there's ever been a console release of a launch game though. if you don't know what i'm talking about look up toss the turtle or learn to fly

30:36 for me. I haven't gotten into Mini and Max yet. A lot of the games have this feeling of "wow wish it was more", but not all of them do so that's cool.

>"If I spend 12 times more money on a game it'll probably be better than a game I effectively got for 40 cents"
I'm not going to try to change your mind but I'm going to highlight the fact that you (1) went in with the mindset of trying to justify it through some set of arbitrary metrics rather than trying to have fun and (2) you were rushing through games trying not to exceed the playtime limit to get a refund.
Yes there are duds. They didn't need to make the greatest game of all time 50 times.

>You're not playing "as" Mooncat, you ARE Mooncat.
I think I remember hearing a dev say that there is nothing in Mooncat that indicates you or the character is a Mooncat. Mooncat gives you zero explanation to what a mooncat is. Grimstone however has an enemy you can encounter named Mooncat.

nah it's pretty great and you're just dumb. clearly made by people who love old games but understand what keeps most of them from being very playable. Ninpek GOTY

Ninpek feels better to control than most indie sidescrollers. It's a shame for that sweet double jump to be trapped in a game with one level.
