Why bother spending a bunch of money on a game when the merch keeps selling without that?

I often fantasize about how much better the world would be if every Asuka fan simply dropped dead. The internet would sure as hell be improved tenfold almost right away. Of course, this would be the easy way out. Something much more appealing would be forcing Asukafags to meet violent ends. And I don't mean accidents, like accidently falling into a meat grinder. And of course, lethal STDs are off the table too, because that requires having sex, which is something beyond any fathom of an Evangelion fan. No, what I mean is murder. I'd really like o break into the house of these degenerates - excuse me - I mean their mother's house where they live, and then strangle them with a nice, thick rope. I'd hold a picture of their beloved waifu in front of them as they black out, giving them a pittance of hope that they might see her in the afterlife. But then right as they're on pit's brink, I'd release the rope, crush the picture, and then stomp on their head over and over until what was once their visage is reduced to a pile of crimson mush, the same colour as Asuka's suit. I could then take comfort, assured that like every Asuka fan, it is impossible that they reproduced, and thus the taint of Evangelion is extinguished from their bloodline upon their death.

Asuka and Rei were added to that NIKKE game recently and it looked like there was a huge marketing campaign (at least for Asuka) about it in Japan.

Tokyo has entire pachinko parlors where it's just wall to wall full body casts of Reis on the entire floor.

There's also a bunch of clothing in Tokyo shops based on Neon Genesis. I know lots of people in the west want to think of NGE as this super deep intelligent series but the reason it's survived so long in Japan really just seems to be due to appealing to coomers and shallow ideas of looking cool for merchandise.

Eva's story is actually very fleshed out and internally consistent. It's told in a way that is purposely confusing and some major details are buried in the PS2 game, but it's all there if you're willing to dig for it. A lot of the thematic intentions are certainly up for interpretation, but the plot itself isn't really.

I mean I agree it is pretty much unimportant to the story the show was trying to tell, which is ultimately driven by its characters and themes, with the actual lore of the universe being mostly window dressing. But some of it is kind of vital to understand exactly what SEELE/NERV were doing.
I just take issue with people who say the plot is nonsensical or incomplete, because it's decidedly not. I don't think the audience was ever necessarily meant to understand the whole picture, but if you want to, there are explanations for just about everything.

What is up to debate and interpretation are the characters and themes, which is the real meat of the show anyway.

I don't really think you'd be able to understand the mechanics behind Instrumentality and how they initiate it, what the Seeds of Life/Wisdom are, and how the Angels relate to that without the PS2 files. You might be able to piece together a general picture of it by watching the show, but a lot of it is left intentionally vague.
It's besides my point though, like I said it's pretty much superfluous to the actual point of the show. I'm just saying if you're somebody who really needs to understand all the details of the story, there's info out there down to the fine details.
