If you let darko live he's initially angry but accepts that it's better to leave him alive since he's a shell anyway, if you kill him he says that he feels empty and basically nothing has changed. So by letting him live I'd say niko ultimately overcomes his trauma in a healthier way, realizing that regardless of whether he killed darko he would still need to cope with the death of his comrades.

It depends on the choice you make and the ending.
Ironically, Revenge is universally accepted as the better outcome of the two endings, and its the one where Niko listens to his instincts and chooses to kill Dimitri.
Rather than hunting down his past repeatedly and being selfish, he only kills Dimitri because of his instinct and Dimitri's repeated actions.

GTA4 was the first one I beat. I started with the original. Played them all up to that point but 4 was the first one I ever actually finished and didn't just play around with for a few days then move on.

My friend got this ending in his first playthrough.
This ending makes me cry a bit. Niko's VA was amazing and I can only hope that 4's remaster can keep his work.

When I was doing the revenge mission in the cargo hold of the tanker I happened to have the RPG-7 equipped when I confronted Dimitri so when the cutscene started Niko was threatening him with a shoulder-mounted anti-tank rifle, the big fuck-ass warhead 6 inches from Dimitri's nose
