The campaign was a solid 7.5/10. The multiplayer however was where the games longevity came from. The custom maps via the enhanced map-making tools really cranked up the replayability. Countless hours playing UMS maps.

ngl, as a kid who played World of Warcraft first and just wanted to know the story, I ended up playing most of the game with invincibility cheats because I had no idea what I was doing and it kicked my ass. I kind of regret it, but even with that the world and storytelling were fantastic. and I ended up getting really into custom games later on.

I should really give the campaign another go and do it properly.

This is partly due to minimum dev team sizes being 100+ people. At Ubisoft they might have 500 people working on the game at any one time across different studios and countries.

In the old days it was 20 guys in an office who hung out all day together. Bouncing an idea off your supervisor was as easy as walking 10ft to his office where you'd have a long discussion about it. These relationships across the smaller team created collaborative bonds and cohesive game vision. Everyone was on the exact same page and knew what the end result should be. With modern studios that's just not the case. You're just a small cog in a leviathan sized machine.

Diablo, Warcrat & Starcraft are all great IPs but I personally prefer the SC universe as I'm more of a sci-fi guy. You can then imagine how excited I was for SC2. When it finally dropped I booked off the entire weekend to play it. I was so disappointed in the art style (Warcraft: In Space) and bland as fuck story, with the "cinematic" storytelling style with 20 minutes of cutscenes after every mission.

The stuff you could do on the ship and mercenary companies/upgrading were good additions though I'll admit.

tl;dr the NuSC trilogy is gay as fuck.

I dont really care about stories in games that much. Brood war story also had flaws but the presentation was top notch. Sc2 took itself too seriously and was like a preachy disney movie or something about how love conquers all.

The actual campaign mechanics of getting to design your own army competition by selecting which upgrades carry over through the missions was good though. WoL is arguably one of the most fun RTS campaigns ever if you can choke down the shitty story.

In WC3 the mission countdown is estimated until the last of your buildings fall, not until you cannot defend your base properly.
So in both of those missions you are supposed to build a meatshield made of towers and then they become super easy.

This mission is actually much easier than people think. Each base receives harder and harder waves, but they kind of "reset" when a base is overrun.
So you are just supposed to stall the undead at Human and Orc bases by strengthening them with your army and towers for ~10 minutes.
Honestly, if it wasn't for the ally AI limitations they could even do it themselves.

One of my favourites of all time. Wanted to play something similiar and installed starcraft 2 but it was so bad. the story is pure nu-blizzard schlock, one campaign has around 30 missions (almost as many as the entire main warcraft 3 storyline), same with units, you have
>a guy in a space suit with a rifle
>woman in a space suit with a healing ray
>guy in a fortified suit with a flamethrower
>guy in a fortified suit with a rocket launcher
>100 vehicles
>100 ships
>100 mechs
this game is the fucking proof that less is more. I've heard that starcraft 1 is way better but these days it will probably be too clunky for me.

But really there was something magical with starcraft 1 custom games while for now starcraft 2 custom maps dont scratch that itch for some reason.

Each base's "timed survival" is based around when Archimonde gets off his blue ass and attacks, since there is literally no way to kill him aside from supreme amounts of cheese.
They can die faster, but Archimonde is the hard limit. So long as you can hold out until his wave comes and rolls over your allies, and eventually your defenses, you're on track to win.
You can destroy the undead's production structures at the start, before they build up, and they never rebuild them. Buy a trio of goblin land mines, and you can kill two of them at once. Buy two sets, and you can cripple them completely.
Furbolg Champion mercenaries do chaos damage, and do full damage to Archimonde. Six of them can kill him, but you need to support them since he has an anhk of resurrection and they won't win a second time.

Okay, I saw this and was confused and did some digging.
As it turns out, if you're playing WC3 with TFT patches, some of the triggers and dependencies change.
Now, Archimonde will only march forward if a certain number of non-tower structures are killed, as it triggers him "defeating" the base. In addition, if the Human Castle or the Orc Great Hall are destroyed, it automatically counts as "defeated" and Archimonde will march forward.
In addition, food costs are different. in TFT, the demons they build as part of the attack require food, as opposed to RoC, where they do not. This leads to strange situations, such as heroes not being able to be built due to a lack of food.

>tl;dr if you're not playing base RoC, Archimonde will not join attacks unless a set number of non-tower structures are destroyed, or it's at the very end of the timer.
That explains why I remember that mission being way harder when i was a kid.

>>725443015
Yeah, I can confirm.
Also his final march trigger is at 39 seconds remaining, which is a very specific number and stuck out to me while I was reading.

>Why have we lost the ability to make games like this ?
Corporatization of gaming(taking the fun out of making games), dilution of talent pool(competent people go work easier jobs for better pay), ideological primacy over "fun" because games have become propaganda just like Hollyweird(this was inevitable due to games eclipsing the main propaganda mechanism of Hollywood), normalization of games as bread&circus way of pacifying large populations(slop), centralization(rat faced coin counters buying everything), greed, shortsightedness(stupidity).
Add to that an overall decay in competence across large swathes of industries due to nepotism and racial/gender discrimination against the people who created this type of games and you have a perfect recipe for mediocrity while competitors are swooping in to buyout everything.(china)

>So, you've taken up Frostmourne at the expense of your comrades' lives, just as the Dark Lord said you would. You're stronger than I thought. You hear the voice of the Dark Lord. He whispers to you through the blade you wield. What does he say, young human? What does the Dark Lord of the Dead tell you now?
>All I heard was enough to hear he was an orc, so I stopped listening to him. DIE MONGREL!

Demastered was really a spit in the face of the fans that were hopefull that they won't at least fuck up a simple upgrade. And how they lied in the marketing... motherfuckers.

Considering that Garithos was largely incompetent, no, he would not have.

It's the only single player campaign I've done from start to finish in an rts. It's honestly 10/10.

Go for the two extra gold mines straight away, spam ancient protectors all over the orc base (and yours too later), spam hippogryph riders and throw in some bears too and keep using Malfurion's healing between waves

I did this and managed to hold out for nearly the entire length of the mission before the orc and human bases both fell and by the time Archimonde appeared, there was only 30 seconds left and he was blocked by a wall of trees

He does at the very end from memory, for most of the mission he sits back at the base as the undead/demon waves slowly overwhelm you.
