Reminds me of the hype around 40K: Eternal Crusade. Supposed to be a battlefield-esque gears of war style multiplayer shooter. It was in super early access for years until being completely shut down. Just terrible production values all around. Team working on it seemed to all be junior devs just starting out.

in a way its kinda better this way, MMOs do not do well in the current ecosystem.

It was supposed to be Planetside 2 with Warhammer skin, this never happened because the devs couldn't make it work, so they settled for making it a battlefield clone.

MMOs will never be like in your youth.
Modern social media changed MMOs forever. And with live service games there is more competition outside of MMOs too which drastically lowers the casual to medium lifeblood that made up a good bulk of the MMO masses.

People don't just hang out in MMOs anymore. They fuck around on social media or they hang out in other games that fight for their attention just the same.
People don't play an MMO to meet random people, because people have already grown tired of that from social media.
Even when actively, in-the-moment, playing an MMO, chances are they'll still actively communicate through social media with their friends or whatever social media group(s) they're part of than actually communicating in game.


MMOs of the past were special because people actually connected to MMOs to actually connect to other people.
There was 4chan and there was IRC, but the typical forum was known to be relatively slow. Nothing at all like a chat.
And without a gazillion live service games beyond the MMOs, the MMOs were the reliable, always present online games that you could always hop onto in-between (or instead of) your single player games. But that's no longer the case.


You could design the 'best' MMO ever made to date, and it still wouldn't be anything like the MMOs of old.
Because it's everything surrounding the MMOs that have changed. It's not so much the flaws of MMOs themselves. The world has simply, for better or worse, moved past that kind of MMO experience.
