Why are items in this game so fucking punishing? You get hit by one item in 1st and suddenly you're 12th. You'd think if they were going to make them so damn strong they'd counter-balance it by making defensive items (Shield, Tornado, Void Wisp) more frequent but I swear I never see these. All I ever seem to pull in high positions are single boost wisps and green gloves.

The issue there is that the angle you throw/drop items behind you is different from the angle items come at you during corners, making it impossible to block while taking turns. All you have to do is wait for a turn before throwing your item and you will hit who you're aiming for 100% of the time.

Tech drift builds drift gauge fast but not particularly fast enough to be good ring gain when paired with the bounty gadget, that's why most people run counterdrift with it. Plus you're on an extreme gear running a build with zero defenses so you're going to get bullied super hard.

What about something like lv1, air trick expert, air trick bounty and ring boost?
Level 1 is all you need to recover quickly from hits, and it gives you room for a bit of ring speed which also helps when you get hit

I consider myself a good player, not as good as some of the top players who can maintain invincibility almost all race, but can still constantly get a good position or even take 1st some times without a drift build.
Remember, at the end of the day the chaos in the last 10 seconds can ruin everyone, the most important thing here is not taking races that seriously and try to have fun, even when losing.
