why are RTS missions like this
>Commander, in 15:00 minutes 6 bombs will explode in various locations around the map. Be sure to disarm them all while fending off attacks, gathering resources, creating units, and furthering our research.

>Also you need to escort 40 of the 42 convoys that contain our entire remaining sperm stores. The convoy drivers are also all recently divorced and WILL attempt to commit suicide by driving into the enemy bases.

>Oh commander, the enemy has opened 15 portals around inside our well-defended base! They are slaughtering our builder units and production buildings. Be sure to close ALL 15 portals within 10 minutes, otherwise you will lose.

>Oh crap, commander, the enemy has released phosphrene canisters around the map! This will kill any units (including convoys) that pass through it, and you will need to build several of the (new unit that I have just unlocked and activate their special ability) to ensure our units pass through safely. Also, the bombs are all surrounded by the gas. What bombs, oh the bombs you need to disarm of course silly! Remember the first objective? The one that has only 3 minutes left before the timer runs out?

>Commander, I am in my luteal phase right now. Can you please take 3 builder units and one research vessel to the merchant district at the bottom left corner of the map (behind the maze of poison gas) and buy me and my friends 12x caramel macchiatos, 3 with double shots, 4 with almond milk, and 9 bagels (5 gluten free). You will need to bring these to me in 4 minutes.

Good luck, commander! The fate of our race depends upon you!

RTS unit behavior is braindead, they have to throw nonsense gimmick missions and gauntlet challenges at you.

>buy C&C Remastered
>start C&C 1
>every mission is just "okay you can barely build anything and surprise there's an enemy attack you couldn't have known about coming"
Evidently I had way too much time on my hand as a kid, given that you need to replay each mission like 3 times until you're prepared for all the random bullshit

Didn't the Zachtronics guy make a puzzle game that camouflages itself as a wargame

A trial'n'error where you don't have clearly defined rules is not a puzzle game, it's just an endless trial'n'error.

As much as I dislike StarCraftII after the last part of WoL, Blizzard made an escort mission that doesn't suck.
The one one where you need to evac civilians on Agria, but they are all loaded into APCs that move and shoot simultaneously and have their own (but small escorts).
Not to mention that in key locations through the road from your base to the evac point there are bunkers you can man and reinforce.
You need to do the escorting a couple of times and each time the escorts are larger...but the Zerg are sending more and more crazy stuff, so even with all this you still need to allocate your forces.
This makes this mission an actually, unironically FUN escort mission.

SC2 might have the absolute best mission design in an RTS, too bad they took a fat shit on story and aesthetics.
Anonymous No.725452612 [Report] >>725453823
Because otherwise it would all be: make deathball -> attack move -> victory

The only type of mission objective type I hate are the ones that trigger after another objective and then open parts of the map.
Supcom1(not FA) did this a lot and it was annoying when suddenly part of the map opened and surprise surprise the new enemy that was in the void now has 4 bases already sending 2000 units to the back of your completely undefended side of the base which used to be the edge of the map.
Oh and also the new objective is there behind those 4 enemy bases, and your units are on the complete opposite side of the map and tick tock you have 5 minutes but it takes 4 just for your units to get there.

But if you knew about this bullshit you could trigger the objective with 1 unit while your army is on standby and just roll the enemy.

Fucking supcom had so much trial and error and encouraged ultra turtling making missions 5 hours long.

Yeah. The team that made the game and its x-packs did a marvelous job in making missions that have fun mechanics and don't feel tedious and also offer some challenges.

And yes, shame that despite this it's all nulled by the story and aesthetics.

my favorite is the laser drill defense mission where you can "pause" the timer and use the laser to destroy all the protoss units and bases

That was fun indeed. The fact that you can go and use the laser on the Protoss makes defenses easier when they start rolling out the bigger guns.
It was also the mission where Siege Tanks are made available to you.
