I used to shit on Revenge but the more I emulated both games the more traffic checking made sense to me. At the end of the day both are good. Sim racing is where the real fun is at anyway.

Dominator is better than revenge
>faster
>no piss filter

I have never once seen an argument against traffic checking that wasn't a woman-tier emotional response, and is often 90% the basis for why Revenge is a "bad" game.

>It's different!
>You get more boost from traffic checking compared to driving on the wrong side (Only true in Traffic Attack thanks to the density of cars)
>It makes traffic completely safe and pointless! (Oncoming traffic is still just as dangerous, and trucks/buses spawn on the right side of the road at the same frequency as traffic from Burnout 3)

The only real critique against Revenge is that its career mode is really limiting in variety for no reason, oh and the visuals in the next-gen version are the most stereotypical BLOOM N BLUR shit imaginable. Otherwise it's really fun, and the soundtrack is the best in the series.

More depth. There is more to learn but also more control over the car, more feedback and higher stakes. When I'm playing Burnout and hugging the wall in corners I'm deriving more fun from the ost and the damage model rather than driving. In beamng or iracing I can drive the same circuit for hours because the fun comes from driving the vehicle. When it comes to burnout my most fond memories come from the ost, my fondest memory in beamng is getting the best lap time with a rwd supercar.

Burnout was at it's best when it was about driving the cars, not smashing them.

Takedown was the formula perfected, being able to smash non-racer traffic out of your way in Revenge made it far less tense.

How about its a shit mechanic that doesnt add anything to the game and takes away any risk of driving dangerously
>>It makes traffic completely safe and pointless! (Oncoming traffic is still just as dangerous, and trucks/buses spawn on the right side of the road at the same frequency as traffic from Burnout 3)
yeah and you can easily slam those away by traffic checking 30 cars into them
its a shit mechanic wich is why it got nerfed to hell and back in Paradise

I did all golds on both back to back at the beginning of the year and have to stick with 3. Although I'm not one of those people that dislike traffic checking either, Revenge was still excellent and you can't go wrong with either.

i really dont get this argument
without takedowns Burnout really doesnt stand out from other racing games from the time
>you uhh get bonuses for driving dangerously!
so like NFS, Project Gotham racing and Outrun?
The one main thing that set it apart was the crashing physics and with that Takedown was a logical progression

It was more fun than it's competetors. That's how it stood out.
It doesn't need a gimmick, and when the gimmick became the focus of the series (4) I noticed myself return to 2 more than any other game in the series.

You've literally just done the woman-tier knee jerk response I've called out.

>yeah and you can easily slam those away by traffic checking 30 cars into them
No, you can't, because outside of Traffic Attack, cars do not spawn with the density required to reliably take them out, and trucks and buses can and do still take you out even after being wrecked so checking them is still massively unreliable.

I swear to fuck, every person who hates Revenge played the first event, the very first event which was Traffic Attack, and just threw their console out the fucking window. The only way you can come to this dumb shit conclusion so consistently is that you stopped playing within 5 minutes.

>You absolutely can check smaller cars into buses during races
I never said you couldn't, I said the density is lower to the point it's not reliable. Traffic density in Traffic Attack is so massive that cars are kissing from front to ass in a near endless chain. This only exists in this mode, in regular races, traffic density on the right side of the road is cut down to roughly 25% of TA, meaning significantly less opportunities to traffic check large vehicles. And said large vehicles can and still do pose a threat when checked to the point it's not worth getting near them.

There's also the simple fact that driving on the wrong side of the road is still the fastest way to generate boost, where traffic is 100% lethal.

Definitely agree with this. Burnout's drifting never felt good due to the tracks rarely being structured around taking tight turns. You could wall ride almost every non-city track if you wanted and the game wouldn't punish you. The rubberbanding doesn't exist for difficulty but to force you to engage with takedown mechanics. After 2, they made it so you could farm boost way easier, which trivialized the system. Once you get used to going fast (which is really just a blur filter) it's a very barebones racing model.

I remember the whiplash I got when I emulated Takedown in 2015, long after I played the 360 version of Revenge, and being given a game where there's like two family cars on the road at any given time. Meanwhile /v/ made it out like the roads were jam packed and insanely dangerous.

The fact that nobody with a budget beyond shoestring (Wreckreation) has even attempted to recreate Burnout is just proof this entire industry is dogshit.

Bugbear could 100% do it, they made Ridge Racer: Unbounded which was a great arcade racer dogged on for having the wrong name. Sumo Digitial could do it too, they're filled to the brim with ex-Blackrock Studios devs who made Split/Second. The first team to make a proper Burnout successor with some marketing behind it would make easy bank.

Need for Speed is dead because it constantly tried to reinvent the wheel. Funnily enough, guess what game made people love NFS again after years of dog shit sequels? Hot Pursuit 2010, which was just Burnout with real cars.

Both of them actually sold reasonably well. The problem was the publishers were Activision and Disney. Both expected insane numbers.

Open world wasn't the problem, it was the simple fact they never used semi-transparent chevron barriers ala NFS to create linear tracks using the open world as a base template.
