They won't do a sequel. "Clair Obscure" is going to be an anthology, like Final Fantasy.

It's more likely that it will be closer to what the Xenoblades are doing, 95% of the story is stand alone and the last 5% involves the other games but isn't absolutely needed for a complete understanding of it.
For example if a sequel to 33 involves the writers, you could see Renoir and/or Clea be major players of the enemy faction, people who played 33 would know their backstory but people who didn't would require it to understand their roles.

If you think Lumiere is not real and their feelings don't matter, then Verso, who is also painted, doesn't matter either.

If you think Verso in the game is real, then a single person should keep suffering to uphold all of Lumiere's lives.
