360>Gamecube>Everything else
360 for hand comfort, GC for notches, Super Nintendo style pad for games that mainly use d-pad. 360 d-pad got fixed in later versions, and is therefore no longer an argument.

>XBox
Start out with a shit design, keep improving, end up with one of the best designs as a result.

>Playstation
Start out with an okay design, hastily add dual thumbsticks in a stupid position, and never change because Snoyfags get bitchy whenever they see something different.

>Nintendo
Come up with all sorts of random designs. Some are good, some are terrible, but all get abandoned so there's no refinement. Arguably made one of the best designs, but it was forgotten with the next system.

The PS3's controllers were perfect, they only needed a hard guard for the triggers. The Xbox was perfect and all they needed to do was improve on the d-pad, they deliberately made the Series X controller garbage. Gamecube controller is the best Nintendo controller and possibly controller in general if not for the fact that the c-stick needed to be as big as the thumb and the controller bigger in general.

they were hedging on whether or not games were gonna actually use the joystick. the controller has 3 different grips
1. dpad + button (conventional)
2. stick + button (3d gaming, most used)
3. dpad + stick (niche. shooters etc)

Except all of Nintendo’s remotes were eventually phased out by the pro controller which they’ve used since the Wii U, with only varying changes.
Innovation doesn’t mean good. Look at the Wii and n64 abominations.

your left hand was suppose to shift from left grip to center grip depending on if it was a 2d or 3d game. The Lbutton and Dpad exist because they were to afraid to go all in on the Joystick and in the end few games used the controller the way it was designed to be used. Zelda for example I think used the Lbutton as a mini-map toggle.

Pretty much every controller now has some form of motion controls that builds on what the Wii started. Not just Nintendo, but Sony and PC controllers too. The shape obviously changed as well as the mechanism to track motion, but the most important functions have been adopted in current hardware.

these were great controllers and should be revisited. the n64 controller looks counter intuitive but its basically three controllers in one. the wiimote similarly has several different modes, even just with nunchuks. and pointing is way better than aiming with sticks, maybe even better than mouse

Nintendo's design shows contempt for arcades. It's as if Nintendo wanted its controllers to be incompatible with more traditional games on purpose, as a way to force its devices to only receive games adapted to Nintendo's anti-arcade philosophy.
See how Sega, much more connected to arcades than Nintendo, did the opposite, and its controllers (Mega Drive/Saturn) made sure to include at least three large buttons in a row for you to mash.

sega was killing it in the arcades so it makes sense for them. nintendo game design stopped being arcade compatible in the snes era with widespread save usage. a lot of famicom games respect the arcade and there was even an official famicom/nes arcade stick released by nintendo. n64 with the joystick instead of an arcade lever was them creating a ghetto version of an arcade stick

>Sony realized they needed to start improving after the PS3 which why they have the DualSense now
>Microsoft stopped caring after the 360 and have only made worse controllers while stagnating the industry
>Nintendo kept taking risk until they made perfection that is Switch 2 Pro Controller
>Valve experimented and now is about to release perfection in a controller, the Steam Controller 2
Microsoft seems to be the odd one out. If you're not willing to try, it's better for you to fuck off which seems to be what they're doing anyways, kek.

But on the other hand, Smash is a very "arcade-like" game. In fact, Sakurai is a guy whose designs are very compatible with arcades, which can be seen in that Kirby game that was released, with the "City Trial" or whatever it's called.
In fact, if I'm not mistaken, there's a controller for Smash Melee that's basically a hitbox.
It's also possible to argue that Mario Kart 8 is a very arcade-like game, while Mario Kart World tries to turn it more into a shitty sandbox.
So at least two extremely successful Nintendo games are arcades, while things like Animal Crossing, Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey, etc., are more typical Nintendo products.

Are there any interviews with Sony designers about why there are two analog sticks on the controller? Because at first glance, it seems more like a case of "two is better than one!" rather than something actually designed for what later became indispensable in games.
I would like to know what made them decide on two analog sticks, what use cases they thought would be useful, etc.

I never recommend 8Bitdo because the ones I bought were terrible. The SN30Pro, for example, so highly recommended on the Internet, is almost useless, not only because of what everyone knows by now, such as the terribly inaccurate dpad, but also because of things like the rebound of the face buttons, which are painfully bad.

Analog triggers, mostly, even if Nintendo dumpstered the idea because they didn't really do much with it and would later go on to make the argument that they go digital on controllers because they found no use for analog input on almost all their games

I'm 99% sure that the SNES didn't trigger diagonals so easily. The NES doesn't, at least, and there are even videos on YouTube where guys examine this "accusation" against the Sn30Pro and find that the SN30Pro really is terrible in this regard, much wors than an original NES gamepad.
Also, the Switch's Pro Controller 2 has exactly the same problem, but to a lesser degree. There's a YouTuber who plays Mario romhacks and Mario Maker who shows this in a video. He's clearly holding the d-pad right, without even coming close to pressing up or down with his finger, but Mario tries to duck because he thinks the down diagonal is being pressed.
There are rare controllers that manage to escape this shit nowadays. Hori's controllers for the Switch 1 usually have more accurate dpads, such as the Hori Pro Pokkén or Hori Fighting Commander.

the americans demanded handles, they had to appease them,
funnily the japs actually complained that the controller handles were too big for their tiny hands, and americans were complaining about the lack of a rumble feature, which is why they pulled production on the dual analog controller and replaced it with the dual shock controller.

PS1 started life as a CD add-on for the SNES before Sony tried fucking Nintendo out of basically all profit in the contract for it, the project eventually became the Philips CD-i and the N64DD which were both failures, on top of the Playstation itself which was a success

Hence the PS1 controller is some slightly changed, copied homework on the SNES controller

The Wii ended up more or less adopting the N64's layout, they just didn't go hard enough, since the Wiimote held sideways was just an NES controller.

The Microsoft way pretty much means we made it shit so we have to keep improving. Nowhere is this more apparent with the company then with 343's handling of the Halo franchise. Someone should post the pic of how they keep apologizing for past mistakes with Halo games and promising to do better. We even have a new addition to the pic recently since Infinite support is being dropped after 4 years when they promised a 10 year lifespan for the game with constant updates.
