Okay but genuinely? At the end of Tenna's boss fight, as the TV channels are rapidly ascending, it ends on channel 66 before fading to black. This is as close as possible to Toby outright telling us that Gaster is extremely important to Deltarune's story. The community isn't just a bunch of schizos, they're CORRECT to obsess over Gaster. Channel 66 is so directly in-your-face Toby admitting to us "yeah Gaster is a key character in Deltarune, and is actively influencing shit." Toby has big plans for Gaster, 100%.

What do you expect/want out of Gaster? We can safely assume Chapter 6 is "the Gaster chapter" but how big is his role really going to be??

Royal scientist before Alphys who "fell into his creation" and got btfo across space and time. There are a few minor secrets in Undertale that imply he's become some kind of godlike being who can influence the game world and there's a dev room sprite people commonly associate with being him. It is implied that he can communicate directly with (You) in Deltarune and is somewhat responsible for you being there, but his existence is unconfirmed and he's mostly just an esoteric boogeyman that Toby uses to fuel fan theories.

Toby constantly is doing shit i'd never have thought he'd be able to do. But I still don't think he'll ever be able to handle Gaster in a way that lives up to his enormous reputation. As part of his "epic creepypasta secret character" bit Gaster is strongly associated with the number "666" and 6's in general
His text ID in his "Entry Number 17," the only direct record we have of his voice and words, is assigned to "666" (The speaker in the intro sequence of Deltarune, where the music "ANOTHER HIM" plays, is assigned "667"). He has fake battle data in Undertale where all of the values are assigned to repeating 6's (eg. 66666 HP). All of Undertale's "Fun events" (random events that trigger based on your save file's random "Fun" value) have at least some association with Gaster, but the ones where Gaster is directly and unambiguously mentioned (the Gaster Followers, the Sound Test room where "Gaster's theme" plays, and the "mysteryman" himself) all occupy the Fun values between 60-66. 66 specifically requires you to pass an additional 1/10 chance (so it's more like 66.6) for the "Gaster door" to actually spawn and be able to encounter the "mysteryman" that is widely assumed to be Gaster himself, in some form.
