An old beat-em up called Virtua Quest on the PS2 and GC has a hub world that looks like it was taken out of PSO. Everything about the game looks like it was reused PSO assets.

There really isn't a single god damn thing like og PSO. That's just fact. Tech-fantasy is rare to begin with. If you're just looking for something in that genre, and not necessarily exactly like that, the other phantasy star games, and the star ocean franchise is about as close as you're gonna get.
There've been some indie RPGs that've tried it, but they either suck, didn't go anywhere, or both.

i think its literally just color filtering/correction that games just refuse to do nowadays.
like, it's blue. everything's blue, either a metallic blue or a watery blue or a neon blue. and it all makes sense that its blue so it's fine and looks nice
i know brown and bloom has a bad rep but i honestly much prefer it over modern aesthetics cuz it at least looked like it was trying to convey an atmosphere, honestly if all the games back then werent trying to be gritty then it probably would have had a much better reputation cuz then there'd be some variety.

PSO doesn't have color filters and different levels are very differently colored. The actual building blocks come in varied color palettes and they're lit by simple, colored point lights. PSO also made a phenomenal use of animated and glowing elements. Wherever you go idle, something always moves.

not exactly the same thing but one thing ive noticed wrt a lot of remasters or sequels of ps2/gcn/dreamcast stuff is that they tend to make the colors a lot brighter than they were in the original games. harvest moon a wonderful life -> story of seasons a wonderful life and kirby air ride -> kirby air riders are good examples.

Not a bad name for it. I love the graphics of this era, enough polygons to kind of know what you're looking at but no bloom, excessive shadow, particles, or other "cinematic" effects to get in the way. The air in these games feels so clean in a way you can't get anymore.

I just know that even if it was miraculously decent they'd still fuck up the music. I want the atmospheric BGM that you could still hear in PSO2 early on, but normalfags need ADHD shit and anime insert songs playing to notice any music at all. So you get the dogshit vocal boss music and the (arguably decent but rather generic) tracks that played in Divide Quests and now in NGS's city area.
Even if they drop one, the other is probably here to stay. But I suppose it's not like they can easily tell the composers to stop sucking or bring back Kumatani.

The Saga series has a strong space theme going for it but I don't know if I would compare it to PSO, maybe Universe a bit. You're mostly on giant space stations and ships throughout the series. The 1st episode has almost no background music but I think it was really trying to capture the emptiness feeling of space.

If you do decide to pick of the series make sure you grab the uncensored undub versions.

Maybe the story mode if you're bored and want a shlocky generic JRPG anime story but sci-fi, or Clementine if you wanna fuck around with the post-patches experience. I'd say that baseline PSU is the second-weakest game in the series, and the only game weaker is Portable 1 because it's effectively a trimmed down port of PSU with new story on top but none of the budget or charm of PSU. Even Zero at least has appeal and a proper bite size to it.
Now once you get to Ambition and proper patched content? PSU is actually kinda pretty damn decent, but still on the more middling side. and because of online server bullshit, you can't ever play the final ending of Ambition anyway.

This is as good a thread as any to ask.
I have memories of a 2000s FPS that had a singleplayer mission where the level is made up of two massive tracked/crawler vehicles and you move between them. I also think missiles of some kind were an objective. Does that ring a bell for anyone? Pretty sure its not UnReal of any kind.

Another memory I have is of an FPS, maybe the same, where you're in a crashed ship and there are small alien creatures that emit light. For some reason I seem to recall them as goat-like, although its possible I got that mixed up with something else. Thank you.

For the first one, Unreal Tournament 2004, Assault game mode, AS-Convoy map. You'll have to pirate that game, it got delisted in 2023 because Epic are cunts. Yeah you said you're pretty sure it's not Unreal, but I can't think of a single shooter that has anything like that from the era, and you probably played it in offline matches with bots.

You can play it, but it has a horrible graphics update attached that ruined all the lighting and makes everyone look like clay because you can use NGS cosmetics backwards, the UQs are a small pool on endless loop instead of diverse, concerts basically are maybe a one-month-in-a-year celebration thing if you're lucky, Challenge Mode lost its Star Gem rewards, they've got some basic permanent scratches up but will never rerun older ones again, etc. You can technically play its story start to finish, even grind some shit, but with what happened to it and its playerbase, you'll never see the BiS gear and never get to enjoy it like it should be enjoyed. >have to play the offline (not story) mode to unlock areas and missions before you can play them online
>grinders were used to upgrade your equipment, but one failure could destroy the entire weapon; patches made it just permanently reduce the max upgrade level by one
>no proper enemy item drops, instead everything was materials so you'd go get recipes to craft shit properly back at your room or get someone to do it for you, turning everything into a nightmare tedious grind
And then SEGAC happened where the Japanese just decided the Americans weren't worth it for a niche audience and axed them entirely out by killing the game off prematurely. It could've had a legacy they controlled, but instead they actively tried to bury it.
