Are you drunk or living in fantasy land? Xbox and .PlayStation get the majority of games that matter and even popular indie/aa games. Sure it doesn’t get every small title but they get pretty much every major one.

Is it really a surprise with GamePass and PS+ people just play what’s in the rotation over buying new titles at msrp? Just wait for a sale

I just bought a warehouse clearance lot of 50 Xbox 360 and PS4 games. Can't wait to dive in. Never played The Division 2 always liked the first games winter atmosphere might start with that.

Meme purchases aside, how does anybody really do 2 games per year? I mean one Gamestop buy 2 get 1 knocks that out.

>>725534453
Nah if you really tried to subsist in the modern Xboned ecosystem you'd constantly be running into shit you just can't play. Either "never ever" or "a year or three out maybe**". I remember it took Xbox is just now getting Silent Hill 2 remake and still doesn't have Stellar Blade off the top of my head. I guess Gaystation 5 users can't play Mecha Break so you can lord that over them.

Xbox 360 is peak forever however.

Yes, but since they are all multiplatform and there are those services, what incentive they have to actually buy games?
If there were more exclusives then maybe, but as it is you are better off playing the game on rotation and, if you want to actually keep it long term, buy it on a platform that isn't going to get discountinued and has their online service (including the shop) close in the next five years.
Basically, console games are the epitome of disposable, and even the general public has realized that.

Because most games aren't worth playing, much less buying
If modern gaming wasn't about muh grafix and storytime, and focused more on gameplay, and had unique styles instead of boring ass realism, I might feel inclined to buy a current gen system and partake
If games went back to 720 w/o all the visual gimmicks, decreasing development time and overall cost, that would certainly help in that endeavor, but normies are too spoiled, and since normies are the only audience aimed towards, that'll never happen
I suspect gta6 will get away with it's $100 tag, and a considerable amount of the industry will follow suit because share holders are such retards for making EVEN. MORE. despite already having plenty, but because most every other game isn't normie darling gta, more games will flop, and gaming may finally die.

That's not really the issue for me (and I imagine a lot of people). The problem is that $70 is a lot of money FOR A DIGITAL GOOD. You don't get anything tangible for it. discovering that raising the price of 'AAA' games when the price of everything else including food is also rising is a not a winner. Which is more important: gaming or eating? Most people are choosing to eat and replay older games.

So I wanted to find out what this study considers a "gamer" to arrive at this conclusion.

Turns out, you're not allowed to fucking read the study.
EVERY article about it is citing Mat Piscatella's Bluesky post, which only shows a graph from the study and nothing else.
There is no link to the study, because in order to access it you have to go to Circana's website and sign up.
But to sign up, you have to list the company you work for. Will this limit what I can see to my relevant industry? Is there some kind of verification process? Do I need to be an analyst myself? Fuck if I know and I'm not bothering to find out.

Unless someone ITT happens to have access and can just post the study, it's IMPOSSIBLE to look at the work they've done to verify its integrity.

For all we know, this study considers you a "game player" if you're the guy who only owns an Xbox so you can play Madden or FIFA, or my mom playing a match-3 mobile game for 7 hours a day.

Sure, but how many of them only play the popular new thing and/or the live service/multyplayer game where all their friends are?
As I said, for people like them there is no reason to buy new games, cause they have PS+ and Gamepass that, from their perspective, basically have no downside.

What new RTS games are out? AoE 2 and Starcraft are still the only RTS games that get any sort of playerbase and they're both nearly 30 years old.

A player base is those actively playing the game. Why would I pick up an RTS that nobody plays when I can play one where they do?

I see that you are moving goalposts here. The claim was that only those two have a player base, when his claim was incorrect. I won't doubt that those two old game have a much larger player count, but that wasn't the claim.

The question is how big of a base are you talking about when you talk about the genre being dead, and does it have to have the longevity of some others?
