Why do modern developers develop their game worlds to be theme parks rather than cohesive and well realized living places?
Anonymous No.725554114 [Report] >>725554375
because games are supposed to be fun.

I agree, and elden ring, is a patchwork hellhole. i saw it a mile off from day 1. people try to tell me otherwise.

well, most games struggle, even WoW with its MMO-esque seperation feels more realised than eldenring

GTA's

I dont play many games but yeah, i just know, elden ring was made by a blind man with a lobotomy.

Oh gee I don't know, it couldn't possibly be that World of Warcraft, a theme park mmoRPG, has printed billions of dollars for Blizzard/Activision-Blizzard?

It's the same way every FPS game emulates Call of Duty's hyper fast explosions every 2 seconds style gameplay. Very few outlying niche titles do anything different.

How did From go from DeS to ER in the span of just 13 years? ER almost feels like a parody.
Anonymous No.725557185 [Report]
>>725555191
that's literally a theme park
Anonymous No.725557193 [Report]
>>725553952 (OP)
Problem with ER is the world feels completely empty and dead despite supposedly being civilizational drama. It can feel like a gmod map sometimes.

You meet about 3 actual NPCs in the world, what does the ending you choose even matter in that case.

>>725553952 (OP)
I get your point but honestly I can give ER a pass
because it's supposed to be this grand decaying world that's hostile to you

but they still could've added real settlements and a town

I was kind of hoping taht elden ring would have factions vying for the land and all that good stuff, like the ballas and grove street in san andreas, but nope, it was just a big flat dark souls level. They even removed covenants so it felt emptier than ever.

Becuase it's hard and it clashes with other parts of game development that modern players care about more. Like Action combat, enemy design/placement, encounter zones/level scaling.

None of these are incompatible with making a cohesive world though. Many games manage to have all of those along with well realized worlds.

same, initially thought this was why they got fat Tolkien involved

And if you name them you'll name games that are almost decades apart and are considered GOATs. My point is it's something that's difficult to pull off, and in some cases it's done by accident seeing as how it's never repeated in the sequels (Hollow Knight/Dark Souls 1 for example)

They could have had more NPCs, more interactive quest lines, better voice lines for existing enemies. All would make the world appear more occupied and improve the game.

Because realism is boring and tedious.
It's what killed RDR2 for me. It's just a sim for larping autists. I dont want to waste 20 seconds having to grab my shotgun and rifle from my ball shrinking horse every time I get off.

Morrowind is a theme park.
Hollow Knight is a theme park.
Gothic's entire world is the size of a city park.

They decided to make games that are fun and not just material for retards with British accents to make video essays about.
An average enemy encounter in Elden Ring is more fun than the best boss fight in Demon's Souls.

Demon's Souls doesn't even have a coherent world design because you literally teleport from place to place.
