I remember not really liking the goal scoring mechanics in the beta compared to the DS games, it felt like in those you could actually slip the ball past the goalie entirely whereas the VR beta the goalie always got to it because of that slow-time thing and then it became a stats battle with no actual football relevancy
I'm willing to accept this as a half baked read or that I just sucked but if not, does it still feel this way in the full game?

the guidebook in game is very enlightening, pretty sure it explains it and it just raises bond gain when those players pass (passing around raises bond the green% on UI and that gives attk bonus on shoot). might be required for the anime bonding skills too, i haven't gotten to them.

there's not really anything "real" about shooting, no. though chips and curves can get around walls and defenders, breach is like a crit, and getting 1-on-1 gives you a sneak shot which is again, just an attk boost so it's still a stat battle.

I havent played the DS games so I cant comment but it does feel like a combination of stat checking and positioning.

Better positioning will give you a better statistical advantage and then theres stuff like castle walls which they dont immediately just teleport there so you have a better "shot" by better positioning.

there's no real downside, it's on a short almost meaningless CD i think. it just stops people getting past a defender once and being gone. the counter i think if the sprint+O run that lets you blast through defence attempts.

however bare in mind sometimes on defence it's a good idea to not engage directly, and instead hit Zone and set up your walls. forces the attacker to go right into their shot chaining attempts with (hopefully) defenders in the way - rather than giving them a chance to smash defenders out the way with focus battles and get an open shot.

You play through the important matches of every previous game (except galaxy and the animes that never got a game, those are coming later in an update). Each match has the "Chronicle match" where you play a fixed team and have story beats during the match, then the "Route unlock match" where you play as your team in a straight up match, then you can move on. There's also harder versions of each match with better drops, you'll want to beat the "Rare Drops match" if you want to use that team's uniform on your guys.

Stands and Saint Seiya armour (as well as fusion and other gimmicks) started appearing in the GO sequel series to the original trilogy. So that would be around the...middle, or approaching the end of Chronicles mode if it's entirely chronological? From what someone showed of the first match of Chronicles above, it wants the player to hit all the key hallmarks of the canon match, so I don't think stands will be appearing before they're meant to.
