You have to try 2004
It has CONTENT out of the ass, with great graphics, great gameplay both in movement and weapons and game modes and one of the easiest native modding tools to do a shitton of stuff. And the OST. And the characters. And the campaign mode. And just about everything.
Seriously it has so much content, it would've been sold as DLC today.

This, by the time UT2k4 came out Quake 3 had already been established as THE arena shooter but once CS 1.6 became more popular the days of arena fps were over

This comparison makes no sense, most of old UT99 playerbase didn't even use steam to play it. Current UT99 veterans also don't play it on steam, is quite uncessesary since everything else is patched and you can just play with the .exe

Shit take. UT99 has great atmosphere, but the presentation in barebones. UT2003 has a great future sports presentation, and UT2004's is fine, both have superior characters to 99

Also a shit take, both games have great tracks, but 99's are a bit better.

Just a few weapons feel better in UT2k4 but not having the ripper immediately puts UT99 on top. The minimal presentation of UT99 is what makes it great, it does feel like a tournament between clans of humans instead of UT2k3/4 random space characters. UT2003 theme is incredible and I don't know why it was removed for 2004. I mean the classic theme is fine but god DAMN 2003 is something that screams ESPN IN SPACE. It is on the gamefiles tho, and you can use it on maps as well.

Speaking of the OST, there's so much good tracks in there. ONS08 is one of my favorites along with Hyperblast Redux

UT99 presentation was good, but agree, the movement alone in 2004 is really fun with dodging and just the right speed, not too fast, not too slow. 99 has its place, as UT3 is more akin to 99.

UT4 was shaping to be THE definitive mix of both. It was really fun to play. So intuitive. But ultimately, they just didn't developed it further with content.

UT2k3 was this kind of a weird retcon that decided to make it Roman-gladiators-in-space as opposed to the modern modern sports vibe aesthetic of UT99. Its backstory (yes, it had one) has no relation to Unreal whatsoever. Not that Unreal is an especially well-developed setting, but basically the only thing linking 2k3 continuity to UT99 is Malcolm and his two flunkies, and even they hardly resemble themselves from UT99.
Then in UT2k4 they suddenly decided to return everything back to the original Unreal continuity, but left the 2k3 stuff with the bare minimum of effort to make it fit, and sometimes not even that (like descriptions for 2k3 maps or characters that still mention the 2k3 continuity).
It was a very odd shift in aesthetics. I still wonder what brought it about, and why was it so crudely done both ways.

A game called "Unreal Tournament" should feature the actual tournament. If they wanted to have a storyline in an UT game, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, you can do a lot with that concept. But make it about the Tournament instead of inventing some frankly hilarious bullshit to explain why wars suspiciously resemble tournament matches now.

i like unreal, but it does kinda feel gimmicky with unique weapons and dodging. especially in 2k4 with the further emphasis on jump/dodge, unique modes, unique vehicles that mimic the weapons, etc.

it sits in a weird space between competitively viable and accessible fun. like you said, ut (especially 2k4) is an odd mix that ends up feeling a bit off, and everything it goes for is done better/more refined elsewhere. at the same time, nothing does it like ut.

they shoved a lot of unique stuff into the series, from modes to weapons, and it was ultimately to its detriment i think. ut was as much a platform as it was a game.

i always kinda hated how all the maps are scaled so that players are like 4 inches tall and the guns have shittastic sound and impacts

Good sound design in general seems to have rapidly become a borderline lost art after the 90's. UT isn't even the worst example, that would Starcraft 2.

It's on the settings, there's whole community gamemode based around it called bunnytrack, just pure movement and dodge
>and I don't remember seeing bots do it.
Bots dodge if you play on higher difficulties, starting from Masterful

I have the original UT99 CD and when you install it for some reason dodging is disabled by default, I can understand people not knowing it's a feature

The worst feature of UT99 is the screen flashes when you get hit, which you can disable only by changing engine settings. You can see it by typing "properties" on the console

That explains it then. I had the original CD version and don't remember ever turning dodging on because I didn't know what it did.

>why didn't it last
It lasted for quite a while and was uber popular. A definite upgrade from the half-assed release of UT2K3. Though the newer additions to the game like Onslaught felt like it was trying to piggyback on Battlefield 1942/Vietnam/Halo's success more then anything. Still fun, just prefer CTF and Deathmatch for my arena shooters the most.
Also the game has aged like fine wine in terms of looks. It was stunning to witness in 04, but at the sametime kept the player models simple and not uncanny messes like say Farcry or Doom 3. Shame Epic shat on it, removed it from stores, and didn't give it a F2P remaster or something. Though they have redirected people from their website to download the OG game, UT99, and Unreal 2 from a fan site (https://oldunreal.com/downloads/). Not sure why UT2K4 and UT3 aren't on that list either.

I failed to mention that Digital Extreme was main reason why Unreal games were so good. CliffyB is a gloat hog but when you look at all the major releases, it was a co-development between Epic and DE. It may be the reason why Epic has sort of distance themselves from everything outside of UT3. Though they also made Unreal Championship 2, which was a proto-hero shooter on the OG Xbox. Shame that never got ported. I'm sure Nightdive has BEGGED them personally countless times to remaster their games, with Tim being a stuckup autistic refusing every single time.

>FROM THE MAKERS OF GEARS OF WAR
I remember the trailer for that game and I knew it was the end of Unreal when that came onto the screen. Even went as far to add that quote to the box art for the 360 release.

Why the fuck would they do this? All the servers are community-run.

While previous games were handed by Digital Extremes with help of Epic, UT3 was developed entirely by Epic and it bombed hard and Tim is mad about it to this day.

I had no idea at the time that the UT2003 theme was supposed to be like NFL, which makes sense considering the proto-Gears of War character designs and the Bombing Run mode.

That sucks, I enjoyed it. The main problem with it was that it was 32 bit, and 4 GB of memory wasn't enough for adding any new content.

They leaned heavy into future sports vibes in UT2k3 and you can see in the in-engine intro cutscene how it's treated like American wrestling.
