Death to /ss/hitters; they don't even care about the boy. Look up /ss/ doujins on sad panda and count how many don't even bother to give the boy a face (literally just shadows for eyes) or even worse—they just draw the boy like an adult dwarf. /ss/hitters just treat the boy as a self-insert vehicle, so it pains me whenever I see an artist actually put effort into drawing the shota because you just know the majority of /ss/hitters reading and jerking to the doujin aren't paying any attention to his appearance. And I know I'll get replies saying otherwise, but you are just the exception. You need not look any further than the literal /ss/hit that gets posted daily and it becomes clear the average /ss/hitter doesn't care about the boy.
I wish shotacons (real) were more discerning in their taste. Too many times have I had a "shotacon approved" game recommended to me, only for me to learn the cute boy in it blushes at a girl twenty hours into the game. Imagine if that happened in a lolicon game—the girl blushing at a boy. Lolicons would go apeshit, so why can't shotacons be just as critical?

Shotas in gaming really are rare. There's a reason you always see the same three or so shotas posted anytime there's a shota thread (Link, 9S, Sunny, etc.), meanwhile I feel like there's a new "lolicon approved" game that gets posted on /v/ nearly everyday. Shit's honestly fucked up.
