only really unique thing is you can play PC games but you'll be pretty much stuck to low end games, and the monochrome passthrough which is very disappointing. the only edge over quest 3 is eye tracking with foveated encoding which will give you a bit of a better picture. like there's no way in hell it's worth it if it's going to cost $800. they have to be hitting $500-$600 for it to be competitive with the quest 3.
>>725665941
Nope, VD and Airlink all have judder because of a fundamental limitation. No matter how beefy your router is or how close you are to it you will get judder on a stream above 100kbps if you move your head. It also does happen randomly.
This happens because the Quest is garbage for wireless VR, it wasn't designed for it, it uses the same wireless signal for internet and for streaming and it doesn't foveate.
With the Frame you can get away with a much lower bitrate by rendering a very small window at a high quality because of the foveated rendering AND you get a wireless connection and antenna that ONLY handles the streaming and nothing else. So you can get away with a 100kbps stream that's high quality and judder free. See? You're a fucking stupid nigger kill yourself.

But then it's even stupider, because it'd be better to design the controller so you can use an arbitrary peripheral like a flight stick or keyboard simultaneously.
Autistic VR chat controllers are more intelligent than this.
They're even putting out a new all-in-one controller in the form of the SC2, which explicitly has VR tracking.

I would like all 3 but it depends. Im unsure if I want the controller if I dont get the steam machine but it would still be nice if its not too expensive. The steam machine price will be the make or break for it. I can connect my PC to my TV but it would be cool to have a dedicated one thats always connected. If its like $400 I'd honestly heavily consider it but I think it will be more than that. If the VR headset is more comfortable/slip off my head less/easier to jork with and is $500 or less ill day 1 buy.

its actually more about the Asahi Linux project that started ARM Linux gaming. Asahi Linux being basically linux distribution that was ported to Apple M2 by a guy who streams as a female vtuber. Reverse enginereed Apple drivers who do freaky shit.
that stared the push towards ARM emulation and through those results and when Linus Torvalds himself installed it Valve probs started funding related projects that users started developing after it became possible to run high graphics in ARM

this emulator is what Valve is using

its also translation from x86 to ARM and then windows syscalls to linux syscalls and then linux x86 syscalls to arm syscalls
and you are most likely gonna stream games from the VR and not use the hardware on anything but simple stuff
and the ARM translation isnt really slow since its not doing it on the spot and its gonna have similar performance as proton / wine performance but maybe with more bugs and glitches and stuff. On principle the translation wont give overhead since GPU stuff is done natively.

Yeah, for old games or low end VR that's fine. I just want to be sure that they're not expecting you to send everything to be streamed and run locally on the Frame itself, rather than coming from your actual PC. I may want to play some high end stuff with features, resolutions etc.. that aren't going to be sufficient even for a decent ARM platform's integrated phone Snapdragon GPU. I like having the option to run things onboard and it being Linux powered, but I just want them to be sure that all the FOVeated rendering stuff can be done when its being directly connected (either wired or wireless) to your PC and having the PC doing the heavy lifting

That's exactly the point, the foveated streaming is meant to make wireless practical. It's a good idea if it's baked in and bulletproof with a dongle, I always heard of issues with streaming on Quest 3 since it's an addon that Meta doesn't care about. Wireless is ideal as long as it doesn't compromise quality or weight.

The damn thing says
>USB-C 2.0 port

>>725686072
Depends on what you mean "streaming"? If it means that like my Index I could pretty much connect it to my PC wired and have it sent along to the headset, that's fine..but I'm worried about a USB 2.0 (?) (or even USB 3.0, 3.1 etc) port allowing that. I'd be somewhat nonplussed if they ONLY let you use the wireless dongle to connect but at least your PC would be doing the computation for demanding stuff when you wished.
>FOViated rendering only for bandwidth and not for hardware itself?
Not sure what you mean? I mean the question is "where" is the FOV being calculated where to render? I mean, if your PC is doing the rendering wired or wireless, then there would be some API that allows the eye tracking data to show what to render at full performance sent back to your PC. However, if it only does that stuff onboard than either its entirely separate and only does FOViated rendering when its rendering on the SoC locally, or some other circumstance?
I guess the concern is that I don't want the whole thing to be left up to wireless bullshit and things running on the headset exclusively. Options are great, but I just wanted to make sure this isn't going to be a situation where anything to heavy for the SoC to handle is going to be a problem.
>>725686454
Thanks. GTAV is quite a bit older now, it was on X360 FFS I think . Still its nice its going to be somewhat powerful,. but still the question is whats optional.
>>725686941
FOViated streaming is different than FOViated rendering - both can be useful in different circumstances, but it depends who and what is doing what job and where.
>Wireless is ideal if it doesn't compromise quality
This is the thing, I'd like to verify that for myself by also having a wired connection if I so wish and all the previous Index etc games made for it. Its good to have options if they're just that

Because they want the headset to be a standalone Android platform too, not just a dumb Steam terminal. It's the same reason Meta pushes mobile-first versions of everything, even if they suck. You KNOW Valve saw people playing Honkai Impact in VR with Quest and panicked. But yeah, nobody asked for this. If I wanted to play crap-tier mobile ports I’d use my phone taped to my face. The only real issue is this thing uses SHITTY LCD panels like the Index instead of objectively superior OLED. Kinda killed my hype. But the fact that it is running a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Valve expanded the FEX emulation layer like they did with Proton to allow full Windows x86-64 game emulation on ARM is HYPE as fuck. And of course game streaming to it. If this was OLED it would be an instant day 1 buy. Now I dunno, maybe if it was 500 bucks. But I'm expecting 900-ish.

What year are you living in? There are zero flaws with modern OLED panels. They can get brighter than LCD panels now, they have infinitely better contrast, infinitely better response times, infinitely less smearing/blur, infinitely superior color, consume less power, don't burn your fucking face like the Index, don't get hot like LCDs, safer for your eyes do to pixel perfect brightness control, infinitely superior HDR, and now they burn in slower than LCD panels (check out RTINGS long term OLED study, modern high-end LCD panels burn-in faster than OLED now).
Genuinely a shame they went with LCD. If it is 500USD or less though I'll forgive them the full set (headset + controllers). You should join us in the year of our lord 2025 and stop operating on ancient pre-covid knowledge.

No color passthrough sucks but Linus says there's a port in the front for some autist to make a colored add-on for it. Hanstraps being sold separately is pretty jewish but I can't fault Valve for trying to save costs. Not to mention the display resolution is meh and the panels are fucking LCD, but I guess that has more to do with pancake lenses, but it still sucks. I guess this is like a Steam Deck (which I bought) situation where waiting for the sequel is probably the best bet. Honestly kinda disappointing but I'm still going to wait for the price before writing this thing off.

There have been issues with how FOSS drivers weren't allowing the full 48Gbps of HDMI 2.1 and so users had to fall back from either 4K, 120hz, 4:4:4 chroma, HDR etc.. or other features as these wouldn't "fit" in just 40Gbps. DisplayPort does better but even that there are some differences from DP 1.2, 1.3 1.4, and 2.0+ You can waffle about DSC (which is supposed to be visually lossless) and the like, but I can't really think that running 2x 2160x2160 displays, at up to 120/144hz, with all the color and HDR and other features, to say nothing for audio and other sorts of potential data will be served as well on just USB2.0 - we're not talking about just sending a prefab video file or something - at least I really hope we're not as I don't want to see the headset come down to essentially not much different than a garbage Amazon Luna "Hey its just the same as playing it on your PC! Why do VR headsets keep trying to do the thing where they strap the goggles to your face and you play with the wii remotes?
Why don't they do the Matrix/SAO thing where they put you into the dream world? That would sell a lot better.

Sort of. They aren't a monitor in the traditional sense, they are a virtual one.
>i see the frame is its own stand alone pc - will it still let me stream games from my pc to it?
Yes, it can stream better than other streaming headsets, because it uses foveating streaming using the eye tracking to give you the best quality where your eyes are looking, and low quality elsewhere. It is also capable of natively running Android, Windows, and Linux VR apps meaning it should be compatible to close to all VR games.

A lot is the same. Similar form factor, resolution, lenses, etc.
It will have a much better SoC (still snapdragon tho), eyetracking, dedicated wifi6 chip for pc connection, sdcard slot, and a slot for more cameras (like face tracking, colour passthrough, whatever you want). Tracking cameras are also lit, so you don't need bright lighting. Only the Quest 3S has this for some reason.
Valve claims audio in/out to be on-par with the index.
And the big advantage is that this runs full SteamOS, not the garbage software the Quest runs.

pancake lenses absorb something like 90% of light, it is a cruel technology. With LCD + low persistence autism valve said the frame gets somewhere over 100 nits. 100 nits is basic bitch unimpressive SDR. You probably see displays that are 300 these days. HDR is like 600-1000+. VR has a real brightness problem unless you go back to fresnel or something thicker that doesn't reflect light back to the screen.

They don't but the "mura effect" is present in all TFT displays (LCD, etc) you just can't see it in those because they're such an inferior display technology there is so much other noise bleeding in to distract you. Only with literal perfect infinite contrast ratio could you find it on sub-par OLED panels.

MiniOLED/MicroOLED (what is used in all mobile displays and VR now) can reach 2000 nits peak brightness. That is far brighter than LCDs.

Not worth what money? You don't know the frame's price. Stop comparing new vs refurbs or used. You have buy a dedicated router. The quest 3 isn't a PC. It's heavy as fuck compared to the frame. We've talked about foveated encoding, but when games support foveated rendering the quest 3 will be even further behind. And you'll just be waiting for the controllers to drift because potentiometer joysticks. I wouldn't buy a quest 3 until the frame's price is released, that's common sense.

I don't think this is intended to be a replacement for the Index.
The Frame is wireless, which cannot possibly have latency as low as a wired connection, and uses camera-based tracking, which although easy and portable is strictly inferior to lighthouse-based tracking. You can't even put your hands behind your back in VR with camera tracking.
This is more like Valve's equivalent of a headset like the Meta Quest. Cheap, portable, entry-level VR.
The Index will remain Valve's expensive fancy VR.
