I was stuck with 2gb of ram between 2011 and 2024 and it was hell. Gotta love that Win7 resource priority setting though.
Idle used 17% ram and as Rimworld ramps up it would squeeze that 17% down to about 3% lol, everything but the game running very slowly.

Because consoles have unified memory developers can decide how much they want to be for the graphics side of things. The PS5 has 16GB of RAM to a PC redditer sounds like "oh it has 8GB of system ram and 8GB of VRAM!" when in reality it can have as much VRAM as a developer wants or vice versa.

If you're trying to play it safe matching it plus half would be a reasonable way to slide under the radar, 12GB of VRAM. Obviously your PC is way more bloated than a console so you still need at least 16GB of system RAM, preferably more.

have you considered that it's weak ass card and the vram has not much to do with it? it's just temporary memory. not the actual part that does the performance.

You don't get it. 8GB VRAM is a spot where it is enough for gaming, but not enough for AI. That keeps prices down for you, gamer, because even lower end 16 gig cards all get bought out and resold for double the price to 1girl appreciators. The best you can do on a 8 gig card AI-wise is old 1.5 Stable Diffusion models and they kinda suck compared to modern stuff. Text and video, forget it. If they don't sell 8 gig cards, most people won't be able to afford the scalper prices.

Again, it's not just them jewing us out of vram (though that too). 8 gig cards are a niche BECAUSE they can't 1girl. If you are just a gamer and you want a budget (-ish) new GPU that doesn't get swept off the shelves immediately, you get an 8 gig. If they only sold cards with 16 gigs or more, you'd just have a market where everything is scalped and all GPUs are too expensive, but for now the 8 gig cards are undesirable for the main consumer of GPUs, yet good enough for the gaming niche, so people can actually kinda afford them.

I had trouble on a 1070 and had to upgrade because the VRAM bottleneck was becoming too much even on 1.5. Upgrading to a 3060 (the last low end card Nvidia released with more than 8GB) made Pony and Illustrious perfectly usable.

Forge with --always-offload-from-vram --always-no-vram flags forces it to use a low amount of vram to avoid out-of-memory issues. The second flag's speed penalty is pretty big but the first flag only adds a couple seconds between gens.

With first flag it maxes out at 6gb and with both it maxes out at 4,5gb. 3060 too, makes it usable for playing modern games while genning.

The VRAM fixes were how I managed with 1.5 but the speed wasn't where I wanted it to be. I barely play games on my PC now so I run at full VRAM. It could be better but I'm not willing to pay a premium for speed improvements. Function improvements would get me to upgrade. Local video gens getting really good might push me over.

The AI doesn't need particularly fast VRAM.
There's that one AI focused machine that should be on par with something like 4070 ti, but in CP77 it can do only 1080p 60-ish fps on medium settings without ray tracing

>Linux ZRAM is a powerful tool for optimizing memory usage and improving system performance. By compressing inactive memory pages and storing them in a virtual block device in RAM, ZRAM allows you to make the most of your available physical RAM. In this blog post, we have covered the fundamental concepts of ZRAM, discussed its usage methods, explored common practices, and provided best practices to help you effectively use ZRAM on your Linux system.

I don't see a market either, but I suppose Valve could eventually build up a following for their Steam hardware products. Might take a decade or more, but Steam didn't start off big either. Either way, I don't see the Steam Machine selling more than 10M units in 5 years. It'll be worse than the Wii U, but if all this is just the first phase of a 20 year plan to get into the hardware business, it's fine.
