They are going to sell it at a loss. The real deal is the x86 translation layer. Valve gonna go all in on ARM and they want to beat microsoft using ARM. Arm is the future and they know it. But most are stuck on x86, and they have to lead the way.

Did a quick Google, the Steam Deck is 1.6 tflops, while the Switch 2 is 3.2 tflops. Doing the math, the Gabecube being six times stronger than the Deck means that it's at least 9.6 tflops. Not only could it emulate Switch 2, but it's nearing the PS5 in terms of power. It's as strong as a three- or four-year-old gaming laptop.

512 GB on base model. Next model is 2 TB which will be a costly upgrade
No disc reader, so competing with PS5 Digital
Weak specs

This is a niche product for Valve fanboys that want something to hook on the TV to play indie slop, just like the Deck. Just like the Deck, very few people will buy it, and it won't be a success.

It has the same flaws as the Deck, it's the same product with a different form factor.

Considering how the Steam Deck is the cheapest in its class of devices, I expect the GabeCube to be very competitively priced.
Valve are not retards, they know they're trying to entice the traditionally console crowd, and I think they can eat a decent chunk of the console market share.
PSN/GamePass are not cheap any more, Steam has over 150 million active users, a ton of people have a Steam backlog already.

i just doubt it's worth valve's time to take the hit. phone companies literally lock you into a contract that guarantees them profitable revenue. sony and microsoft don't contractually lock you in like, that, but practically speaking they do since what the fuck are you going to play without paying for their online services. revenue streams also get less jagged the more individual sources you have, so it's easier to do the loss leader strategy if you know you're going to sell in the tens of millions rather than, like, maybe 5 million if the steam machine performs well

The steam frame is flawed for PCVR and price (unless they surprise us with it being $500 VERY UNLIKELY, this is probably $1k based on the specs since it is a very good upgrade compared to the index if it was wired).
I would highly suggest a Pimax crystal light if you care about Price and PCVR (goes up to 120hz because it has a direct displayport connection to your GPU). And the Crystal Super if you really want the best resolution and you have a lot of money (needs a 5090 for the best experience).
If you want fully body VRchat, I would suggest going with the original index or if you have a lot of money, get the bigscreen beyond 2 + the required index controller + base stations, and note the eye tracking (note that I think you could get full body tracking with a webcam, but I don't own a vr headset or play vrchat so I dunno). eyetracking also needs to be considered (but this goes outside the $1k budget).
If you want wireless (and the limitations for PCVR quality) + cheap and you don't mind signing in with facebook, I would suggest the occulus quest 3s (you might as well call it the quest 2, the quest 3 is a direct upgrade).
This compares the headsets.

My TV has an Nvidia Shield connected by Ethernet. Bought it this year despite it already being a 6 year old product and I am so happy.
I have a controller connected to it, plus a wireless keyboard with a built-in track pad just in case I need it. But usually I only navigate with the controller.
I simply launch the Moonlight app, select Steam, it connects to my PC (wakes it from sleep if needed) and launches Big Picture mode. Works just like the PC was in the living room to begin with.

>Nigger there is a smaller instruction set meaning less transistors required for a given operation meaning less power loss to heat. This is not some deep electronic wizardry it's just basic electronics. It has always been the entire purpose of ARM.
Nah, the size of the instruction set doesn't really dictate how many transistors are needed or how much power gets lost as heat, not anymore at least. That might've been true back in the early RISC vs CISC days of the 80s, but modern CPUs don't work like that. x86 chips don't literally have a transistor for every instruction. They all get broken down into smaller micro-ops internally, and those run on the same kinds of execution units you'd find in an ARM CPU. So both end up looking very similar under the hood, a bunch of RISC-like units fed by a complex front end. The transistor count difference today mostly comes from cache size, branch predictors, and integrated GPUs, not from the instruction set itself. Power efficiency now depends way more on process node, clock speeds, and architectural choices, not whether the chip speaks "RISC" or "CISC"
So yeah, ARM being "simpler" doesn't automatically make it more efficient. Apple's M chips feels """magic""" because they are on TSMC's newest node (they are currently on 3nm, while the rest of the industry is on 5nm and 7nm), not because ARM has fewer opcodes.
