Practically every PC game was DOS at the time. Only thing you got from making a game specifically for Windows is a distracting border and menu bar. Even now, when you buy a retro game off Steam or GoG there's a good chance it'll be running off a DOSbox emulator.

I want to shill this game but I can't find the 2000s version with the ship designer and multiple factions anymore, only the DOS version and a new mobile one with less content and no ship designer. The forums where people put their modded ships are long-dead too, which is sad.
It's a shame because it's a really neat take on turn-based that I haven't really seen anywhere else, you set a target direction+thrust for your ship and assign missiles to launch for the next five seconds.

>The goal of the Museum of ZZT site is to collect these worlds, offer discussions into them and the community built around them, and keep them safely preserved.

Said discussions happen to be about the shaming and suppression of early 90's teenage culture because of course today's cultural values retroactively apply to every single time period then now and forever.

This bullshit in addition to Epic Games' bullshit in general has done the impossible and soured me on ZZT. Pic unrelated but it's the only ascii image I have on short notice.

You didn't get as close as you thought. I occasionally returned to try again for 25 years before I finally reached the ending. The game will eventually reveal that you need to have collected every single star which you probably thought to be completely irrelevant. If you manage that, the final platforming challenge that the game throws at you will probably take at least 5 lives to get through on your first try.

the first lords of the realm has this wonderful exploit where any time you let the computer auto calculate the battle results both sides lose at least 10-15% of their forces no matter what
so you make an army consisting of 10 peasants and send them off to fight the 1000+ man army and those 10 peasants will somehow kill 100-150 men
